So, a few years ago I used to absolutely love writing these multiple choice fan fictions, where I would write a portion of a story set in the Half-Life universe and then offer a handful of choices at the end. Members of TWHL could then choose the path of the protagonist and the story would continue based on the most popular choice.

Having looked back at these recently, I can honestly say that they were pretty awful. It’s always been an aspiration of mine to write a book or a series of books and as such these little stories have really helped me improve over the years. So, I figured why not start a new one and see how it goes now. First and foremost, I need a setting. The Half-Life universe is pretty expansive, so there are a few options in terms of the location and timeframe in which a story could take place. So, without further ado, here is the first choice. This will help me to first of all decide what to actually write, as well as gauge the number of people that would even be interested in such a thing.

A) I want to hear about a band of new recruits on the Black Mesa Security Team during the Resonance Cascade.
B) I want a story about a squad from the HECU during the events of Half-Life
C) Let’s hear about a citizen of City 17 just before the uprising
D) How about a story about an average Joe, living a normal life as the catastrophe begins to unfold across the globe.

Black Mesa Security Team appears to be the clear winner at this stage. Nice nice. There is equal interest for some HECU action as well as experiencing the full extent of the Xen invasion outside of Black Mesa. As for option C, I think we can accept that Half-Life 2 is just a little bit shit. I shall start writing then. Let's see how many chapters it takes before I give up this time.

...

Otis looks over his clipboard at the 3 new recruits sitting in the induction room.
"So ahh... Looks like you're the news guys huh? Lets see, Jojo, Big Jim and Claude? Well, welcome to the Black Mesa security team. I'll just need a moment to print out your security passes and we can head over to the armory"
The three recruits shuffle in their seats, anxious for their first day. Placing the clipboard on the desk Otis looks up again realizing something is very wrong.
"Say uhh... Claude, buddy? Where's your tie?"
The other two look at Claude as it becomes apparent, unlike them, his is not wearing his Standard Issue Black Mesa Tie, therefore not in full uniform.
"Sorry I wasn't issued one?"
"Oh thats ok", replies Otis, "We can go down to the storeroom and grab one once we get your passes printed"
Otis taps some buttons on the printer which responds with some grinding noises and a flashing display.
"Stupid machines! Why don't these things ever seem to work?!" he says, picking up the phone on the desk.
"Hey Terrence. Yeah... Hey do you have any new cartridges? Well... yeah alright, alright. And I was meant to play bridge tonight! Ok sure, seeya"
Putting the phone down Otis turns to face the recruits, still sitting in their chairs silently.
"So ah, I need to get some more ink cartridges for the printer down at the storeroom. I can probably pick up a tie for you too, Claude. You're not permitted into the facility alone without a pass, but I can escort you, if you want to come. Otherwise you'll have to wait in the induction room till I come back. I'm sure you understand. Heh heh"

Choices:
A: Wait for Otis to return
B: Go with Otis to the storeroom

B. Gotta get that tie ASAP

B. Sure it's against regulations without a pass, but so is not wearing the tie.

So I've written three pages of this thing and honestly I might scrap what I've got. I think I've probably taken the most boring beginning possible and ran with it... Apologies for the delay.

I'll probably start over tomorrow and pick up from an interesting point in the main character's life (AKA the actual disaster)

B: Go with Otis to the storeroom

Jojo stand up, "Lets all go to the storeroom. At least you can show us around a bit"
"Yeah sure! follow me" Replies Otis, motioning for the recruits to follow him down the hallways.
After a flight of stairs and some C1A4 style hallways the group arrive at the storeroom. Terrence the clerk pokes his head up from behind the counter and places a box on top
"Otis... So here's the new recruits?" He asks, adjusting the glasses on his nose
"Yeah they're starting on Sector B, patrols at the mechanized bay today"
"Well... I can probably print the passes here right now from our printer to save time but here's the printer cartridges anyway" He says, pushing the box towards Big Jim, who reluctantly picks it up and cradles it
"They're don't talk much do they Otis?"
Otis nods and smiles "Yeah they're a bit generic hey! Barney actually said that to me too yesterday"
"Which Barney?" Terrence says, picking up the passes from the printer and handing them to the recruits
"Uhh... can't remember. Hey Terrence, Claude here doesn't have a Standard Black Mesa Tie, can we grab one?"
"Sure. Make sure you put it on before you leave though"
"Thanks" says Claude, unwrapping the tie from plastic "Why do we all have to wear these ridiculous ties?"
Terrence and Otis swivel to face Claude and frown.

The group leaves and Otis begins filling them in on their assignment
"Ok, so jump on the next tram which will take you to Sector B. Check in with the shift manager there who will assign you personal space and armory. I think he's going to - "
Otis stops dead in his tracks. He turns and faces the vending machine in the hallway.
"Mmm candy..." He says to himself, eyeing the chocolate "You wouldn't have a quarter would you?"
Claude, tie draped over his shoulder goes to answer but notices the tram turning up outside.

A: Help Otis get candy from the vending machine (and probably miss the tram)
B: Race to the tram and board before it leaves
C: Just get the resonance cascade going already!
