This article was very helpful. However, let me point out that it is also a bit outdated. I'm commenting on an 8-year article so this is to be expected of course. With higher amounts of RAM and better graphics cards--even better integrated cards--mapmakers can and should push their poly counts higher. I'm running a map with chambers that go as high as 1200 wpoly without any problems.
