Well, ever since the 14th of December 1997, it's finally has happened. After just 39 days in theaters, James Cameron's Avatar surpassed Cameron's own Titanic on Monday at the worldwide box office to become the highest-grossing film of all time. Both released by 20th Century Fox, Avatar has reached $1,858,866,889 while Titanic earned $1,843,201,268 total.

The studio says that a whopping' 72% of Avatar's ticket sales, or $1.35 billion, has come from 3D venues. The domestic total now stands at $554.98 million, which still trails Titanic's $600.8 million, but probably not for long. Internationally, the film has reached $1.3 billion compared to Titanic's $1.242 billion.

Personal Comment: Well I suppose it's official, that the future of cinema is 3D, there is no going back now. This also means that it will be overall lot more expensive to go to the theaters soon, regardless what movie you go see, since now every movie studio will want to jump in to the 3D bandwagon also.

I hope not. 3D has a place in movies I think.

If every movie was 3D, I wouldn't be able to take the 'deep' movies seriously.

3D is just a campy gimmick, IMO. That's why I watched Avatar in 2D when I had the choice. It doesn't add much to the actual content of movies, just glasses you have to wear.

Plus, 2D movies make my mom jump sometimes. Imagine what would happen if the objects flying towards the camera were 3D.

JeffMOD, you should really go and see Avatar in 3D.
Clearly you've seen nothing where it's been done well.

Avatar doesn't have objects "flying towards the camera." It's all very subtle, and makes the experience much more submersive.

As for price, to go and see a film in the Glasgow Imax is only ~?1 more expensive than regular cinemas.

I'm afraid that I will have to agree with TheGrimReafer. I to will not like to watch ALL the movies in 3D, especially while wearing those cumbersome 3D goggles they lend you at the theaters. Don't forget also, that the first generation of 3D TV's will be hitting the market later this year, at least that's what they said on this past CES. And if that happens, it will just fuel even more the 3D hysteria that's going on strong right now.

Hooray. More money will go toward 3-D capability, and less toward movies with actual deep story lines.

Woo.

Hoo.

(Edit: not saying anything about Avatar, it was awesome. Just predicting a surge in crappy movies in the future.)

I have a message for George Lucas!:

Make Star Wars Episodes 7, 8 and 9 now in full 3D! Use Avatar's level of CGI for all the aliens. Oh, and while you are at it, film all 3 movies back to back, like it was done with "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

Am I asking for too much?

Well yea, I'm afraid you are. You see, BILLIONS of $, ?, ?, ? says other wise, there's just to much money to be made from tie-in merchandise, and that's not even counting the movies themselves. And then there's the millions of hard core fans world wide that want new movies made at any cost.

Exactly.

In fact, I actually addressed that in the post I was GOING to post, until I refreshed, and lost it, and posted that pitiful post you see up there.

Don't forget there were shitty 2D movies too.
