I'm not really cool with the whole drug thing.
"Uh oh.. The end of akira is going to scare the hell out of you on shrooms"
It'll scare the hell out of you either way.
Edit: I also just learned about psilocin, which I then realized is probably the basis for Psilous's name, and actually explains a whole lot about him and his maps. Oh Wikipedia, what would I do without you?
Commented 14 years ago2010-02-13 06:28:50 UTCComment #48992
Yeah, Akira on shrooms probably isn't a good idea. I've wanted to try shrooms for some time, but have had trouble finding a reliable person to get them from. I have a whole plan for a first trip to be sure that all possibilities are accounted for.
Edit: Oh fuck, 4 hours late to this party. Well, I hope you had fun.

^ This. (EDIT: Okay, the one above it) Don't do drugs and drive. If you're going to do them, do them in a locked room filled with soft things. Hotdog, you ninja'd me!

Tried shrooms once. Had the same problem I had with grass, which was all I could think while high was that it was fucking overrated, and I wanted a scotch

All I can say is that you shouldn't need any drugs anyway. Don't continue down this path of self destruction, I've seen this happen to too many good friends and basically all that results from it is bad. Just... Just say no to drugs, as cliche as that statement is.

Because it is legal, and in Ireland there seems to be literally no possibility of having any kind of social life past the age of fifteen unless you're ready to go out to a pub most nights a week. Even then I tend to order non-alcoholic drinks when possible. I guess I just hate the effect it has on people. I value intelligence and the ability of proper fore-thought and planning, something alcohol seems to rob people of. And all of the 'positive effects' are attainable by just staying awake a few days straight, something that tends to happen with me pretty often.
Also, another factor may be the fact that all of the scumbags in my school started drinking around the first year, and these are the people that I loathe. I suppose I just wanted to distance myself from them as much as possible. As a result, I'm pretty sure that by the end of sixth year I was the only one out of about 150 students who didn't regularly go out drinking.
[Edit] And fuck you irony. As I was writing this I accidentally knocked a glass of scotch into my packet of crisps. I don't particularly want to consume any more alcohol than that sip of Vimto-Scotch that I had before, but I'm bloody well starving. God damnit.

You didn't answer my question. Why do you draw the line between alcohol and everything else? Why is it that you feel that it's OK to drink, but not OK to smoke tobacco, marijuana, or try hallucinogens?
Commented 14 years ago2010-02-13 17:17:22 UTCComment #49020
Ah. I don't know. Maybe it's because the 'next step up' in my eyes is cigarettes, something which I know of no positive effects for. And they are legal, so any illegal drugs must be somehow worse, right? And I know that that's not sufficient reasoning, but that's the best reason I can give. I am subconsciously repulsed by the idea of drugs, so it seems to be my subconscious doing the reasoning. And I suppose we all know that the subconscious mind isn't the best for proper reasoning.
Although ultimately, I'm not sure why I draw the line there. A few years ago, there wouldn't have been a line; I would have nothing to do with drugs in any way, shape or form. It seems to be in recent years that with the increased pressures to take in alcohol for social reasons that my definition of acceptable and unacceptable has wavered. I'm annoyed at the fact that I've succumbed to peer pressure in this regard, but I suppose I should be proud that this is the only time I have. Everyone I know has caved in at some time or other, almost all the time within the first years of them entering secondary school. It took me until I was in college to alter my view of alcohol from 'bad' to 'necessary evil'. And I know that I'll never find cigarettes acceptable in any way, they disgust me in ways that probably aren't healthy. I remember once, one of my friends found a box of cigarettes and pretended to offer one to several people. When it came to me, it took all my self restraint to stop me punching him in the face and disowning him as a friend there and then, and actually find out what was going on. It's more likely that I'll become President of the United States despite never having lived there than it is that I'll ever start smoking. And that's only one step up from alcohol in my opinion.
So maybe my somehow institutionalised seething hatred of drugs makes my viewpoint somewhat skewed; maybe I'm not the best person to take advice from in regards to drug habits. But still I implore all of you, don't take any drugs, unless you positively have to. There are many people who have given reasons not to, so listen to them, if you see my reasons as being too extreme.

"so any illegal drugs must be somehow worse, right?" Yeah, that's completely wrong. Marijuana and shrooms, particularly, have empirical evidence suggesting that they are among the safest drugs in the world. Cigarettes are borderline synthetics, with all the fun potential hazards that are implied by any synthetic drug. I don't want you to take my word for that, but you should look into it and find a better reason. If you prefer to stay pure, that's all good for you, but your argument is totally subjective and any point you make with that mindset can be countered by saying, "But I'm not you."
And for the love of god, do objective research instead of relying on googling "marijuana is bad", because you're going to want to see how these things stack up to what's legal.
Edit: It seems like you have this preconceived notion that the legality of drugs is based solely on potential physical harm, and you have to dismiss that notion.

"Yeah, that's completely wrong. Marijuana and shrooms, particularly, are widely reputed as the safest drugs in the world." As I said; the subconcious mind is not the best for forming cohernet reasoning, you asked why I draw the line, and I answered with my reasoning, or at least the closet to my reasons that I can comprehend.
And as for me saying that people should stay off drugs, I said not to take my reasons for it if they don't make sense or don't apply to you; plenty of learned men and women have found reasons not to. Take their reasons. And I accept I can't change other peoples opinions and probably won't, but I still hold to the fact that the advocating of drugs both saddens and disturbs me.

I don't hate drugs or those who use them. As a matter of fact, some of my best friends smoke marijuana. I simply don't want to try it myself.
EDIT: Also (I'm not going to check this), just out of a guess, I'm sure alcohol has, in one way or another, killed a lot more people than marijuana ever has.
Commented 14 years ago2010-02-13 20:38:48 UTCComment #48997
"I'm sure alcohol has, in one way or another, killed a lot more people than marijuana ever has."
Correct. Alcohol has done far more damage to society than Marijuana ever will.
Drugs are everywhere in culture, there's no reason to skirt around that fact, it isn't going away. People everywhere are going to experiment with them, and the only time I think you should judge someone for doing so is when it's clear they can't control their habits. It's the same for alcohol, cigarettes, junk food... you need self-control.
I've been pretty much surrounded by these choices growing up, none of it surprises me anymore. If people want to try it, it's their choice, if they don't, it's their choice. They just need to be aware of their habits, going into it.

My policy is that there's no harm in just trying things. I happily have the mental willpower not to be seduced by the social aspects of drugs, and avoided peer pressure to start smoking in my high school days as well.
I like alcohol because if drunk in reasonable moderation you can just have a fucking good, chilled time and lets not forget that you become significantly braver. It might not be a good thing to say, but I doubt I'd have hooked up with even half of the women I've dated were it not for a wee nerve-calming dram of Whyte & Mackay's.
Grass, I've tried several times. 3 of those times I felt really ill afterwards. Worse than any hangover I've ever had. The high wasn't worth it. You can get a similar buzz from booze.
I just am unable to have a good high off anything more serious. I know i shouldn't so I always get paranoid and have a shit high.
Commented 14 years ago2010-02-13 23:57:36 UTCComment #49007
The main reason why I avoid anything stronger than homebrew vodka is the way it's so much harder to control the effect. When you drink, you're in control. You want to get a bit more drunk, you take another shot. If you don't, you stop.
With drugs, you take a puff or swallow a shroom and you're no longer in control. The effects come down on you too quick (mostly) and you can't really effectively bail if you want/need to. As for alcohol, you'll be fine as long as you don't fuck up.
.. that and I also had a fairly scary experience with weed a few years back. Not touching that stuff again. Shrooms I never found appealing, and as interesting an LSD trip would be to endure, I just don't see the point of going through all the trouble getting the stuff, not to mention the possible repercussions.

Daubster, you can treat smoking just like drinking. Take a few hits then wait a bit and see if it's strong enough for you. If it is, you stop. If it isn't take another or two. It's not like you take one pull, and you're completely out of it.
You can't overdose on weed which is nifty. I'm not a big drug guy. I'll smoke and drink once in a blue moon, but I don't like seeing people put down marijuana because of their own ignorance. The only problem I see with it compared to alcohol is that obviously if you smoke near people they will be affected. Solution: don't smoke near anyone. =)
Oh and my friend told me when he first tried shrooms he took a dump after and it felt like something crawling out of his ass. Thought that was funny.

Mario, that's my issue. The only trips I had from weed were either non-existant or just plain bad. I'm sure it simply takes experience to start controlling it properly, but I really don't see the point of going through all that trouble. As long as alcohol satisfies my needs of helping me relax, I'll just stick with it.

I've only had one good experiance with weed, we hotboxed a car for a good hour, I felt fine and normal when I was in the car, but as soon as I got out everything because absolutely fucking hilarious.
I can't smoke it, makes me feel ill so I don't bother with the stuff, I just drink.
However, trying shroom's just the once won't do any harm, and will kill my curiosity!

Well I've never smoked alone, so if I'm done then I won't throw down any more money to do it again. I like weed better because there's no hangovers and it just makes everything funnier compared to drinking. Sucks that you have to shell out all that extra money for food though :[
I'm gonna chill with the girl and watch akira, just go with the flow essentially.
