I'm having some trouble with sprites showing up in game.. as you can see in the screenshots.. the sprites appear all grainy. I was told that the color depth must be set low.. If this is the case.. how do I change it's settings?

I'm pretty sure that's in your Windows display settings, with the options like 256/16-bit/32-bit, etc.

nope, thats not it, its set to 32-bit..

It also only seems to effect the sprites. :

Just to be sure it's not machine-specific, you could post the map (or just the bsp if that's your preference) to the Problem map vault and see if others have the same problem.

positive.. If it was then this would be a pointless thread..
What you see in the screenshot, is what I see ingame.
Perhaps it's just my graphics card.

Looks like its kinda happening everywhere, not just the sprites. The textures also look grainy if you look really carefully.
What kind of graphics card do you have?
Posted 18 years ago2006-05-22 17:08:31 UTC Post #181547
I'm not really sure what kind.. it can't run HL2.. if thats any of an indication.

The textures are not grainy whatsoever.. not sure where your looking, but, the textures are fine..
I have alot of env_sprites though, ranging from 40-5 for the FX amount..

What about 255? Does it only happen to this sprite?
Post the map in the vault like BJ said so someone else can take a look at it and make sure its not machine-specific.

I used to get that glitch with my volumetric light beams, as seen in Guidance. Usually happens when a lot of overlapping is going on. Changing HL's color depth to 32 bit (wasn't the startup parameter for that -32bpp?) did the job. Keep in mind - Windows color depth may have been set to 32 bits, but a game does not necessarily use these setting.

Bytheway, that mech looks awesome. :)

Anyone else know about this.. changing half-life's ColorDepth..
Seventh said something about this, but he was'nt sure..
I'll try it by adding -32bpp to the parameter.

Edit
Ok, I tried the -32bpp, and it worked well.

Now my only question is, do I need this set strickly because of my graphics card?

could be possible if you're running an old system.
if you say that you cant even run hl2, i wouldnt doubt it.

HL2 is rather demanding, I'll have you know.

Ub: Run DXdiag (Start -> Run -> "dxdiag" -> [enter]) and let us know your specs.

It looks pretty normal to me now--Nice Mecha BTW!

I switched to 16bpp for the heck of it, and you can't really notice until you fire your weapon, and see the graniness of the sprites, like your first pic.

No. HL doesn't start in 32 bpp mode by default, so it's the same for everyone, not just you. :)

-32bpp to the parameter.
Oes! I though by 16 and 32 you were talking about "color quality" under video options...

Is it the same thing?

Heres my specs:

So CaptionP, if I was to upload the map, then the people who are unaware of -32bpp will have a bad experience. Thats not good! :

That's correct. You could put a note about it in your readme file (or somewhere else where it'll get more notice) but other than that, there's nothing you can do.

Oh well, it's not as if it's looking that awfull without 32 bpp...

...yea, I'll just include the info in a readme. Thanks for all your guys help
