ok... next question is my texture i downloaded is split up into about 6 different sides and directions do i have to worry aobut that or does it piece it together on its own?

Look at them all and you'll see each one has a common part of the name. Take the desert sky for instance. It's parts are desertup, desertdn, desertft, desertbk, desertlf and desertrt. Each one has the word desert in it. So the sky name is desert. Watch out for textures with underscores at the end though, like cs's snowlake_ sky. Originally I entered snowlake and it didn't work, 'cos I ignored the underscore.

Sky texture? Here's a definition:
http://cariad.co.za/twhl/tutorial.php?id=31

It's included in most wads. Looks light-blue.

www.planethalf-life.com/wadfather go to the new site its faster and do pick a sky that looks nice and download it put it in your half-life/valve/gfx/env folder and there u go to use it in a map make your sky using the sky texture and then go to map properties and put the name of your map in the environment map part

If you don't want to mess up your sky texture, do it the good way !
Instead of looking witch texture goes where, make your skybox in the default skytexture (browse textures for "sky") then in map properties,
env map (cl_skyname) set the name to whatever your tga file is called. and done ! after compiling you'll end up with a perfect skybox and all sky-tex in correct order/place. Thats how i do it for my default HL-skies...

that's weird...sounds like your hl.wad is mangled. Make sure that you haven't got only used textures ticked, but if it still doesn't work try getting a new one from somewhere. To get the texture itself won't work, as it's not a simple texture but one that is coded or something.

oh, and no idea what the error is

I'm surprised nobody beat me to it... "Tommy of Escondido" has a great page on errors. Hit this, and then bookmark the main page. Some good info, a few links, worth reading! That's assuming you already finished reading all the tutorials here :P

tommy's error page is great indeed, but I would strongly suggest that you use Zoner's Half-Life Tools instead of the old q-tools that come with Hammer. The token too large error will probably disappear.
