Far be it from me to police everything that goes on in these forums, I decided that I'd take the time out to simply sit back and have a little chat (thankyou V for Vendetta) about TWHL.

From what I'm hearing, it seems there's a rift forming between many members. Rather than berate you, I'd thought I'd just remind you all of the common thread that brings us all together: Half-Life.

We're all here because of that one little game and I think it's something we all should remember. Take the time to extend a hand of friendship (or at the very least, courtesy) to newer, more inexperienced members. Yes, sometimes they can be a bit nooby, but a little patience can go a long way. If you really can't stand it, just PM an admin.

I can't stop you all from being tards, but I do urge you all to take a moment and think about what you're about to post. We all come from different parts of the world: it's impossible to predict the reaction of all the members here.

Last, but not least, have fun. Crazy threads are all well and good: just don't go berserk.

Try not to spam this topic too much, k? ;)

Honestly, I didn't stay a noob for long, i just wanted to map and a place where people can play them. So i learned fast because it was encouraged, not like it is today.

The place seems to have turned a little hostile yes.
Posted 17 years ago2007-05-24 16:08:01 UTC Post #223330
To be honest, I don't see where you notice all this hostility (which apparently is widespread) - the only place which ever gets really hoarse is the Gen Disc forums, and it's not like noobs go there for mapping questions, anyway. Questions still get answered in a (mostly) friendly tone in the HL/Src engine discussion forums.

Sure, the recent Stevey! incident turned a bit nasty (and hilarious) in the Source Engine forums, but he really was a retard. Not all new members are treated like that.

The attitude has been pretty much the same since I joined, from what I can remember... if new members are persistent in their idiocy they get flamed. If they ask sensible questions and actually use our advice, they don't. Now the Gen. Disc. (or Stuff) forum has always been another deal. Here, everyone's a bit more joking, a bit more offensive and, indeed, a bit more hostile... but in large, it's really confined to this area.

If you really feel the attitude towards new members has worsened on the question forums, do your part to change it. Be friendly, respond to every question you can. I'm sure people will follow suit, lest they feel like assholes.

I think a small amount of hostility is still appropriate. It obviously has to be proportionate, but if we go around being nice to everyone new they'll never learn. I certainly remember some arses from here and other online venues who I have grown to be "friends" with.

It's all about drawing the line and what people see as acceptable. It only takes one action to set off a chain reaction like this thread.

I think some people are having trouble seeing the difference between newbies and idiots.

Newbies do not deserve to be scorned for their ignorance towards either mapping or the ways of this community. It may take time, but they'll all learn to use Google and look through the tutorials before asking any questions, and they'll all learn to become proficient in finding solutions to their problems. The way I see it, it's not that these newbies are stupid; it's that they don't know how to figure things out for themselves. More experienced mappers encounter problems as frequently as the newbies do, we just don't talk about it as much, and we don't ask for anywhere near as much assistance. In this way we are all alike, we just don't show it as much.

Now, idiots are a different story. Idiots are the people who come here, show little or no interest in mapping, make asses out of themselves, and make other people's lives miserable with their lame and annoying antics. As far as I'm concerned, these people don't deserve any sympathy, and we shouldn?t expend any effort on making it a better place for them.

My point is, the vast majority of the people who get treated poorly are totally asking for it. If you?re a newcomer here, and the primary reason you signed up wasn?t to ask questions, answer them, or submit your maps and discuss mapping, you shouldn?t be here in the first place.

That?s my opinion anyway.

Ahh...this thread brings back memories.

When I was a newbie, I was greeted with encouragement and useful advice.

Just look at one of the first maps I made.

If you put in real effort into your work, it shows. And if you're willing to accept constructive criticisms, you'll become better.

I have to thank ZombieLoffe for one of the most uplifting feedbacks I've ever gotten as a new mapper. :)

TWHL peoples have been good to me and helped with my mapping skills, sure I have asked stupid questions but it does'nt take long to pick it up and learn from the good tutorials.

You know what I take back my statement...TWHL hasn't changed...The amount of spammers has.

And thank goodness TWHL is like it is...It's the peoples rather vicious attacks that can make newcomers realise they need to grow up...And I think it was G_kid who said you'll look back at your old comments and actions and think what an idiot you were so either they grow up or the eventually realise they were idiots.

So I pray TWHL stays the way it is forever.

A (hopefully) helpful tip to any new members reading this:

When joining any forum with established, long time members, it's best to lay low for a couple weeks, lurk around to figure out people's personalities, maybe make a couple inconspicuous posts, and then start joining in on discussions more.

Bursting in and starting an argument, or posting controversial opinions on day one is a sure way to get flamed and be hated from the start. People have absolutely no idea how you normally act, and assume you're just an asshole, because they have nothing to base your personality on. There's no way to back yourself up when you've just started digging in, and it's likely everybody will be against you.

Another huge mistake is to assume everybody knows who you are and respects you, just because you're a well established and long time member on other similar communities. I'd tell people to look at what Orpheus did here as an example of this, but now that's kind of... impossible.

I think you all should realize the fact that you don't know anyone on here as a person and that you shouldn't consider any of them a "friend." Getting into serious talks about "rifts" forming between your online "friends" is definitely not socially healthy thing. If someone doesn't like you on an online board, just ignore them. Don't worry if your "friend" doesn't talk to you anymore, you don't know them, and they don't owe you any obligation.
Posted 17 years ago2007-05-26 18:09:55 UTC Post #223527
To be fair, everyone was a nub ONCE. Even I used to be a HUGE noob back when I first joined this place. After you've been here a while the big pr0 elitist attitude rubs off on you (yes I know what you're thinking you sick fuck), and the nubness tends to fade.

I must say that lately the new members don't stick like they used to.

Is the new generation of mappers just going to give up after getting a bad review on their first map.

Hell, if I was like that I'd have released my 'lab' map and left a long time ago.
