As some of you may know, I developed a displacement generator at the start of the year, dubbed Twister.

As some of you may also know, it hasn't been updated in quite a while. Since Feburary, in fact. Since I started uni the project went on hold indefinately. Now, the project is off hold.

If you have never used it before, here is where to download:

Note this is a new ISP, therefore all the old check for updates will not return updates. When I release an update, it must be redownloaded.

New feature I just added - smooth twists
Wont work for hallways, hallways need to be squarish, but perhaps useful for non-hallway use.

I am also attempting to implement something everyone can get excited about, but I wont tell you unless I get it working. Wouldn't want to disappoint.

As before, post ideas of what you think Twister should have. Maybe even extend beyond displacement generation and say what you would find useful as, say, a multi-function Half-Life/2 editing program?

PS - I reserve the right to bump this thread. Just getting in before someone uses my edit button picture against me :P

Neat, I haven't put Twister on my new computer yet, I guess this is a good enough reason to do so.

Is there any way of doing a fractal displacement??
Like in some modeling programs (I know for a fact that blender has one) you input a number and based off the number it does a fractal on the geometry..

Got that off the wikipedia page.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fractal

Just another thought.

in all seriousness, would you use it? because the fractal would be exactly the same every time, i dont see a reason to put in in, really.

now for a WIP pic:

note that just because it opens in crafty doesnt mean it opens in hammer yet.

The fractal displacement thing could be very useful in theory, but you'd have to randomize it somehow in order to make it functionally useful.

exactly. i mean, i can randomize numbers fine, but randomize a function?

randomize a variable in a function... isnt it something with like.. &rand or something?
I dunno i failed C++
I think that the fractal will be very useful for Mountainous or even very hilly 3-D skyboxes. Just a quick thing to not worry about spending any time on.
You can always modify it to your liking at a later time.

I've released the newest version, its really a service release, because I don't have the big new feature quite ready yet. It's quite close though.

I've changed ISP's, so the update in 0.3a wont work - you'll have to download manually. So if you have Twister, follow the link to update! I'll make sure that the update works from now on :P

Not much has changed on the surface, but please comment on the new 'smooth twist' function and the new format of the text in the Twist tab. thanks.

Fractal terain generation is done all the time. So you shouldn't have a problem. Yes for a given seed it will come out almost the same, but thats why the input from the user comes in such a range.

my point exactly
