I still can't believe it.

I thought mapping is such a niche hobby, but apparently, it's more popular (or going to be) than I thought.

Pretty soon, your 80-year-old grandmother is going to hi-jack your Hammer and make her own maps.

And I wouldn't buy it. I got Java for Dummies ages ago and they didn't explain it well...

That's pretty cool.

Gotta say, though: Those "For Dummies" books suck. Don't help much of anything.

And why use that book when there's such awesome free articles out there?

That is pretty cool, though I agree with Luke. All the stuff it claims to teach you can be found on the internet for free.

The real trick to learn something, specially mapping is to practise a lot, until what you do can be compared to what others have done (I'm not talking about imitation, just aiming at a certain level of detail etc).
These books are a good way to learn the basics in an organized way, but they won't get you a workplace at Valve's headquarters.

the only reason i ever read mapping references these days, if not for help with a specific entity, is simply to see the mapping process through someone else's eyes.

Often i'll see little tricks here and there that i just wouldn't have thought of otherwise.

A book like the HL2 modding for dummies just wouldn't get any use from me.

I should have written a book like that and gotten paid for it.

Oh, I forgot. I did write mapping tutorials and got paid for them. :P
