I was thinking of starting a vent server and was wondering if anyone here had any interest in have one for TWHL. Anyone interested?

Also, anyone know how many slots could be supported on say a 800MHz Atom w/ 512MB of RAM?

I'm interested, we have a ventrilo server for this website www.wasd.ro ( it's a gaming site in romanian.

Huntey : Read about ventrilo then you'll get the point. It's far easier than staying tens of minutes ( or maybe hours) to search after some ids to start a conference in skype.
And besides that, it's fun. Balls of steel ? There's a mute option.

Vent is short for Ventrilo.

I don't need to read about vent. I used it and teamspeak for years.

Skype is better.

Skype is worse. You have to sign up and it have lots of unnecessary stuff. Of course, they aren't made for the same thing.

So what is it exactly? Like IRC but speaking rather than typing?

Vent is a voice service similar in principle to IRC. It's used alot by clans for CS:S and WOW for a more secure way of communicating to teammates.

Because of the nature of a Vent server, there might actually be more activity in it than the IRC chan, which is dead most of the time.

Still need to know if the system can run it though. :( I have NO luck w/ Google usually.

Yes

TawnosPrime,

• Server Requirements •

The server CPU utilization under most conditions won't even register, so a fairly low level computer should be more then sufficient.

Bandwidth usage is determined by the codec and is dictated by the server. It could be as low as 600 bytes/sec or as high as 8000 bytes/sec per voice stream.

If you're going to use that computer only for ventrilo, 512 mb are very sufficient.

The truth is that vent servers can be configured for ... speed or quality, by codec. So, if you have a large bandwidth you should select the suitable codec.

Now go make it. It will work ;)

The only time #twhl3 is active is during Aussie-hours, which is never.
