Singleplayer was okay, I actually played Halo 3 single player twice, just to get it beat on Legendary. But I hated the multiplayer, same with previous Halo multiplayers.

@Soup Failure: What's wrong with Modern Warfare 2? So much better than Halo.

It's a spamfest. The developers took the pick-your-playstyle mechanic that worked so well in COD4 and jacked it up to the point of just being one massive clusterfuck of weapons and perks.

Have a 360 but don't play Halo. Have only bothered with Halo 3 single player and 2-3 matches online. I just think the whole series is so "meh", and the community is absolutely horrible.

Seriously, the Halo community is the proverbial asswipe of humanity.

OWNED. We still love you hawtdawg.

@Tawnos: Live is only 50 a year so if you're paying 60 you're getting ripped off. LIVE is also not bad at that price, and you get a LOT more support and features than Sony is giving. And a LOT less downtime. You'd never realize the difference until you tried it.
And you can't argue vs. PC because most the servers are dedicated servers owned or hosted by other people paying for them FOR you. But PS3 being free just makes it shitty. Been there, done that.

Managed to turn a Halo thread into a fanboy thread, woot.

In the end all is clear:

PS3 = Graphics, long exclusive games.
Xbox = Amount of Games, made to be multiplayer.

Sorted.

P.S: Halo is overated, gets more unpopular everytime they release a new one.

I still hate these things. I don't consider them anything else but pure gadgets.

Some may say it's the true way to play games, if you consider yourself a gamer.
No. It's the true way of earning money, it's not good for us, it's good for gaming companies. There's virtually no piracy at all on consoles.
But think of that: you can make your own "play-station" from a computer. Besides, with a computer things are much more flexible.
PS3 = Graphics, long exclusive games.
Quote from Wikipedia:
The PlayStation 3 was first released in Japan on November 11, 2006
Seriously, PlayStation3 and ShitBox just stop the evolution progress of the games. They just set a standard that last for too long, and gaming companies are forced to lower the grade of realism in their games. Of course, I only talk about the graphics evolution here.
Still, I believe buying these consoles is a waste of money. And electricity

The PC is, and always will be the best gaming platform.
  • Mouse and Keyboard is perfect for shooters, not those rubber fuck sticks on console controls. Of course you have the option to plug in any controllers you like if the need arises.
  • PC Gamers have at least some degree of intelligence, having to install / patch a game rather than just putting in a disc and playing from the off.
  • PC's can be upgraded easily.
  • Free to play online*
  • Largest modding community.
  • Multiplayer games supporting more players.
  • Easy to chat with friends using keyboards or a range of voice products.
  • NO HALO.

The only console I have ever bought was the good ole first-gen SNES that came with Super Mario World. I'll never regret that one.

Before that, I had inherited a Dynacom from my uncle, apparently some obscure Brazilian ripoff of the Atari 2600. It mysteriously disappeared from my house before I got the SNES. I don't think I'd pay a single cent to get it back :P

Yes. The consoles occationally get something good to themselves, but nothing is going to beat the versatility of the PC anytime soon.

And from what I've seen of it, Halo: Reach is quite different than other Halo games. It's now somewhat class based, there are several classes with different abilities and/or weapon loadouts. It looks like it'll be much better than the other games. Although I don't think I'll ever get it. It's better, but not by enough.

Gosh, why do internet discussions about games always end up being console wars fanboyism? Just let people play whatever games they like on whatever platform they like, there's really no need to debate endlessly about it.

The thread was about finding other people playing the same game, yet the first replies are almost exclusively "omg this gaem sux"... I mean, there's no point to it.

The PC is, and always will be the best gaming platform.
Because I love shit-stirring, let's knock this up a notch. Not only are you wrong, you are sounding like a complete douchebag.
- Mouse and Keyboard is perfect for shooters, not those rubber fuck sticks on console controls. Of course you have the option to plug in any controllers you like if the need arises.
I agree. But FPS is not the only genre. Third person shooters play well on dual analogs, but consoles allow for other control systems to be used, such as the wave of motion control coming in, the touch screen of the DS, gun controllers for games like Time Crisis, etc. PC may allow you to plug in controllers, but that in no way means that there'll be games that use them.
- PC Gamers have at least some degree of intelligence, having to install / patch a game rather than just putting in a disc and playing from the off.
This is the worst one. You sould like an elitist prick. You're basically saying: "We don't let those stupid dumbass console gamers into our PC gamer club - only smart people allowed! Patches act as a gateway to eliminate people of lower intelligence."

In fact, the fact that you raise this point is actually a point AGAINST PC games - you have the inconvience, annoyance, and difficulty of patches and compatibility. Thankfully Steam has given us the convience of autopatching, and consoles have done this too.
- PC's can be upgraded easily.
They can also NOT be upgraded. This means that PC games have to have much higher compatibility than console games. This adds to development and testing time and cost.

(... skipping a few ...)
- NO HALO.
PC: No Uncharted. No Alan Wake. Heavy Rain, Gears of War, God of War, Final Fantasy, Mario, Zelda. The list goes on. No matter what games you like, there'll be many console exclusives that you'll enjoy. Many console players would say that "No Halo" is a big flaw in your "argument".

Listen. PC is also my favourite game platform. But this does not mean that it is superior to any other platform. Stop acting like an elitist fuck and learn to accept that your opinion isn't the one truth.

Otherwise, listen to Elof (and ignore that I didn't).

I did not intend to sound elitist. In fact my post needs to be altered to start: 'In my opinion...'

I admit my post is entirely based on my opinion, but at no point did I mean 'These are the facts' and 'This is how everyone should think'

If my opinion makes me a pompous prick then so be it. That's me. :)

...and yes, from my experience the majority of console players are brick-headed teens.

I'm lucky enough to have almost every console in my house. Between us we have a Gamecube, Wii, PS2, PS3, Xbox 360, DS and two Lynx II's (Scrapyard Dog, anyone?).

Not to mention a PC, and two laptops (only one I'd consider gaming-worthy).

I'm the ultimate brick-head. And I call my mate insane for owning 5 guitars while looking for another!

:| I do hope you're joking.
You best be joking.

I do enjoy consoles, but as far as I'm concerned, the only ones worth really having are the Nintendo ones. Mario, Zelda, Metroid, all quality games. IMO, Halo, CoD (if they were ever different) are now being made to milk the series for all the publishers can get.
And yes, I have played shooters on consoles. They can be fun, depending on the control scheme and the same gameplay, sound, story, etc. I hold for PC games. Goldeneye is one of my favorite games. (It doesn't have enough levels for my taste, but...) I enjoy Nightfire. I've played Halo games before, on both PC and Consoles, but... while sort of fun in the small doses I played them in, My opinion on them has never changed, the series is overrated and non-inventive.
And while both can be used for the other, PC is the king of FPS games. Consoles are the king of platformers. Both can be used for quality games in any other genre, if the console ones have to be a bit short.

PC is the best platform.
This is not bias elitism. I own a 360, a Wii and a PS2 as well as far too many retro consoles.
I also own several games on PC as well as their console counterpart in order to be fair in my judgement.

I literally can't remember the last time I turned on my 360. Currently it's gathering dust on a shelf somewhere after I attempted to play the atrocity that is Fallout 3 on it. This is one of, if not the best game I have ever played on PC. Everything about it is stupendous, and yet somehow on the 360 I couldn't even get to level 10 without giving up in frustration. The loading time differences alone were laughable, especially when there was a loading screen for going in practically every door. What the hell? More surprising still when it did finally load and it looked like shit. I played the game on the two platforms side by side, using an HDTV for the 360. It still looked like it was sub-lowest graphics settings on the PC.
Bring in the lack of custom content, poor FPS controls and repeated instances of severe framerate drops, there was no contest here.

Almost identical stories with GTAIV, CoD4 and Mirror's Edge, although I'll add that CoD4 on Xbox Live was fucking horrible, too.

The Wii was entertaining for the first 2 weeks after we got it. I don't think I've used it since.

It's also worth noting that Valve games especially (although there are examples of others) require console players to pay for new content like the recent add-on for L4D2.

Consoles limitations also basically halt the advancement of graphics as developers have to scale down everything to work on non-upgradable plastic boxes.

As for the issue of the console community - there hasn't been this big a surge of ill-informed fanboyism and blind baseless defence of opinions since the dawning of Christianity. GO WITH THE MASSES HALO IS THE BEST GAME EVER NO WAIT METAL GEAR SOLID 4 IS NO WAIT COD4 IS NO WAIT MW2 IS NO WAIT etc etc etc.

As for PS3, I just kinda laugh in its general direction. Everyone I know who has one seems to be waiting for its big moment which still just hasn't seem to have come.
The two titles I constantly hear PS3 players going on about are Metal Gear Solid 4 and Heavy Rain, both of which I've played, and both of which would probably be better suited as movies.

Heavy Rain especially wasn't so much gameplay as "press X to continue story"

Platformers and the like work ten times better on consoles. Case in point: the Devil May Cry franchise. Or maybe Ratchet and Clank, God of War, or Silent Hill.
Fighting games are also arguably better suited on a console because the controller is closer to an arcade machine than a keyboard is.
RPGs also seem to work better because an array of menus is arguably more comfortably navigated on a controller than a keyboard, as well as the ever-increasing platform-like nature of console RPGs today becoming more suitable for joystick+buttons.

Again, it's not a matter of absolute superiority, it's a matter of what floats your boat. All you've cited in favor of the PC are shooters.
Posted 14 years ago2010-05-19 19:21:15 UTC Post #281360

find me one fighting game released on the PC which doesn't let you use control pads. One.
Platformers and the like work ten times better on consoles
Strongly disagree. Play Psychonauts to see a platformer done far, far better on PC.
RPGs also seem to work better because an array of menus is arguably more comfortably navigated on a controller than a keyboard
Again, either plug in a controller or even better, use a mouse?
Oblivion was shite on the Xbox too.

Just because you don't play consoles doesn't mean that nobody plays consoles. There is no "best" platform, each one has their pros and cons.

I don't understand the pointless hostility coming from people claiming to be "PC gamers" towards the various consoles and people who play them. I think it's a combination of elitism and fear.

Did I suggest that?

Elitism? Probably.
Fear? Perhaps. Gaming is being dumbed down and creative ideas are getting stamped on, with massive generic titles taking the limelight.

My hostility is directed at people who decide that their thing is the best without being remotely aware of any alternative; who continue to use arguments with absolutely no research or experience behind them at all.

Call it hypocrisy if you like, but I base my arguments on fact and I try things before I judge them.
