The power of facebook is very... powerful.

It is filled with HL and HL2 lovers, of course. I think that we should make an add saying "Come to this vast community of several experienced programmers, and learn something yourself!"

It would be simple: We just click the "Create Ad" button.

Even better.. make a specific facebook page for twhl (like they do for bands and other media) with direct links~!

Ha.. true.

that's really more of a task for an admin though..

..I hardly ever look into that facebook crap.

Personally, I wouldn't even have my facebook account had not my sister made it for me and added all my long-distance family to it.

Why the fuck would we want to advertise? Are you paying for that?

Steam is Facebook for VideoGamers. Besides I don't really like the facebook because it is infinitely boring.
Posted 13 years ago2011-03-15 23:24:07 UTC Post #291775
Boring seems like an odd choice of word. I don't use Facebook for entertainment - I use it for networking and keeping in touch with people. Boredom doesn't really factor into it when I'm only using it for ~10 minutes per day.

I have steam and facebook, and I don't socialise with people on either of them except for sending very occasional posts to my best friend.

on the topic of facebook, i'd love to be able to 'like' journal comments. saw1833's post on Dimbark's typically stupid journal entry had me laughing out loud and looking for a like button. was an absolute pearler.

Oh mah gawsh I'm famous!
I need my own facebook page for "Liking" now.

But really, adding the ability to "like" posts or threads would be pretty nice.

More so to keep things neutral (rather than saying you "like" it or thanking a person for a post) would be a rep system like most forums.

A rep system doesn't necessarily have to be visible in a point amount (but it can be), it just simply needs to show on a post that someone thought the post was worthwhile, and the post was therefore praised.

Just saying.

I've had this debate with Ant and I refuse to associate TWHL with Facebook in any way. Not only do I think it would degrade the site, I wouldn't want any TWHL content to go onto Facebook because that destroys our copyright policy - as soon as it's on Facebook, they own the copyright to that content.

It's possible that the next version of TWHL has some kind of rep system, though.

Well we could have our own "like" system for TWHL 4 perhaps? I don't really care to be honest, it might be cool. Do you have any ideas on how the rep system could work Pb, like whirlpools aura system? Maybe it could even tie in with how many times people "liked" your posts/journals. Just some thoughts.

I'm not on Facebook. I don't want to be on facebook.
Also, since I just thought of it, we need to be able to quote posts directly, so the formatting is not lost unless the user remakes it manually.

Yeah except Pb actually programs these forums himself, not many other websites do that.
Posted 13 years ago2011-03-16 08:50:21 UTC Post #291801
And I do it for a reason - I don't want any of the rubbish, bloat and baggage that comes along with all the large forum systems. I can do much better if I code it myself.

I don't "like" the idea of "liking" things - it's useless and inane. It doesn't add anything to the site. The concept of "rep", however, shows a quick indication over which users contribute more than others, and encourages users to be more helpful and answer questions.

Maybe the rep idea can be a simple display of post count somewhere under the users name, during actual posts with-in the forums.

Also, I'd just like to second Jeff Mod's idea, about a direct quoting system. It's tiresome for me to copy and paste everyone's previous posts.

Bullshit. Rep just get's abused as a means of lolz and is no more useful then a 'like' type system where the only difference is you're liking individualized stuff, it's still going to get abused.

I like and use Facebook but see no reason to integrate it into the site. There is a mapping site that does this very thing. I won't mention the name but it really is kinda confusing and unnecessary.

@discostu: you can map but you can't figure out Facebook? lol

No Facebook please...

The Steam forums have made every aspect of any kind of rep system disgustingly unappealing in my eyes. I'll have to politely beg you to not implement a rep system.

Understand people's concerns about a rep system being abused and not helping the site. Obviously if it were to happen we would think long and hard about a "right" way to do it. Just because it's useless on some other forum you visit does not mean that it'll be useless here.

Some forums have a daily "rep quota" you can give out to others - i.e you can give up to 10 points a day. Other than that, I'm not sure how else would I limit it.
Posted 13 years ago2011-03-17 22:44:35 UTC Post #291880
Just have someone monitoring it, if someone gets a whole lot of rep from the same people over a short amount of time (ie clearly abuse), make a penalty, that all your rep is multiplied by -1.

I doubt it will be abused here anyway, unless TWHL4 brings a whole bunch of new retards with it (and in a good light, a whole bunch of valuable members too)which is probably worth hoping for.

Facebook's useful for me as far as keeping in touch with IRL friends online goes, but unlike TWHL, we don't have our own site with forums, etc. :P

Don't see any point in integrating it here. Steam Community covers more bases for what we do anyway, so why not give that more attention?

How would facebook degrade twhl? And facebook is great for touching up with people you know or have known before. Even just whent to the same school as. I've met some cool people from it as well. But im with striker on not accepting random friend requests, people just do it to look cool and have many friends. If you do so you have to see their posts which you don't care about bc you don't know them so I avoid it all together. It will hide whats actually going on around "your" life.

If you don't have fb, make one. You won't regret it in any way shape or form. Just get a few people you know closely like family as friends. And than a few friends and people from school and let it do the rest.

But you didn't mention in any way how it wouldn't specifically degrade twhl, you only listed what facebook isn't terrible for. We're talking abuot integrating some form of facebook [even if only a 'like system'] system into twhl, which isn't that great of an idea.

Yes it is. Since TWHL is practically a family(we're kinda used to talking together around here), adding a bit of fun won't hurt anyone. I bet a few "likes" or even "dislikes" would bring a a little smile on someone's face.
It's just about those little pleasures that make life great. They are ignored by most of us.

The real problem is not clogging up the interface. I like how TWHL is still clean. But an intelligent TWHL4 design can permit a few funny additions.

Everything that goes on facebook becomes property of facebook. This includes photos, personal details, friends lists, and the like. They make profits by selling this information to any company willing to pay for it.

Furthermore, it's almost impossible to remove anything from facebook. Employers are starting to use facebook to judge the worthiness of possible employees, so if something undesirable makes its way onto facebook, it's very difficult to get rid of, and you may find yourself missing out on a job.

Hard to get rid of? Just un tag yourself or remove a picture. And if you don't have anything to hide like me you'll be fine. Otherwise, sure; don't make one. I didn't mention integrating it with twhl at all just that its fine. But you are right it does really put your info. out there and if you are worried about it than stay away from it. You can set your privacy to not allow anyone that isn't your friend to view information though. And I doubt facebook would sell this information... Than again who am I to know I hardly trust anyone.

Talking about being late on these forums, I've always hated the expiration of threads after 3 months. At least make the bump feature functional, not having to contact an admin whenever we want to bump a thread.
Also, will you please increase the limit of PMs? Let's say, 100. Actually, as long as I'm asking, why don't we go for a cool infinity? The 20 PMs is rather pointless, it doesn't occupy much space.

Is it really such a hard concept to understand however, that if you don't want something undesirable to be exploited or twisted against you, then don't put it on the fucking INTERNET to begin with.

Posting something embarrassing on Facebook isn't any worse than running around a massive mall with only your underwear on screaming "JEW JEW JEW", at least a hundred people are going to see it and remember it, and you're going to complain when it shows up on the news? Don't put up or do embarrassing stuff to begin with, and you won't have to worry about 'covering it up'.

And if you post embarrassing stuff while drunk, then too damned bad. It's your responsibility, and if you get drunk it is still your responsibility, end of.
