This wave of horror maps is a very good idea, unfortunately I am disappointed. Nothing jumps out at you, there aren't any scary rooms or screams of the tormented. You want to see a scary map? Or maybe a series of them? Maybe even a mod if I want to take the time? I'll show you a horror map that will make you be afraid to sleep at night....

Screenshots coming soon to a thread near you.

Well the environment just doesn't look frightening... no offense to Jahzel...

I bet he intends to scare us with super high r_speeds. :P
Horror in HL is quite hard to do, unless you change the code.
Posted 20 years ago2004-07-01 03:20:15 UTC Post #37920
they hunger managed it. i think wcdude is being over-critical and boastful

I was just about to say the same thing. I'm more scared of the mangling of the engine than what is done in it...THAT is something that'll keep me awake :zonked: .

Horror is managable if you are a master of scripted sequences and impressive entity setups. And I didn't find Hunger scary. Even with the lights off, headphones cranked up and playing at 11pm in only the light from my computer screen....but that's just me. I'm never really scared of anything in movies or games, although the Silent Hill series had its share of creepy moments.

You cannot create real horror in HL. You'd need better animation sequnces for the monsters, that'd help alot.
DOOM3, will be real horror, I'm really looking forward to play it.
Posted 20 years ago2004-07-01 03:20:24 UTC Post #37923
Well This will be a dead giveaway to some of the stuff that will scare you (and if I say this everyone will starting doing it) but I must to tell you how I intend to make a horror atmosphere:
1.Random sounds of terror (tons of new sounds that are not taken from the .pak ooooo ahhhh)
2.In some areas, extremely disturbing monster skins or images (disturbing as in scary, not as in sickening) maybe appear for a split second right in your face with a scary noise then vanish
3.I am inspired by Fatal Frame (an EXTREMELY suspenseful horror/puzzle game www.fatalframe.com)

I think I will be turning this into a small mod rather than just a map, this will delay es_station for a good while...
Posted 20 years ago2004-07-01 03:20:28 UTC Post #37924
You cannot create real horror in HL.
....It's possible using the engine, is it not? Create some custom animation sequences, make more monsters...Like the stuff being discussed in Jahzel's thread. I agree, the default Half-Life setup is a bit....lacking in the horror department, I was kind of referring to mods and anything with the engine in my post, but it didn't come across that way.
DOOM3, will be real horror, I'm really looking forward to play it.
Me too, especially since it's designed on NVidia cards. (still works on ATI, anyone who has one) Huzzay for the GeForce!

The skull looks poorly cut out and stuck on. The name and screenshot look like youre coppying that weird dream map in the vault. No offense, thats just how it looks.

Coolfat: you wrote "www.fatalframegame.com" originally; I didn't realise the bracket was a problem too.

And you can still see the 16bit colordepth relics.
Posted 20 years ago2004-07-01 17:03:14 UTC Post #38073
I'm not ripping off Weird Dreams. If I could have made fog months ago, I would have already made this thing. Its not boring, you have to actually be in the map to understand what it feels like. I couldn't have done a better job with the skull because I only have paint.

Ok then -- so you want horror, right?

Well I was playing around with spirit not long ago and I achieved some really eerie effects:

Not the kind of place you would like to visit after a cup of tea and biscuits.

I was thinking of using this in my own horror idea, who knows...

A bit empty and not very detailed. Make the pillars round. You could also add some strange plants and stuff. Maybe some skelletons nailed on the pillars.
The shadows look crappy too, but that's the old engine.
Posted 20 years ago2004-07-02 14:24:27 UTC Post #38309
and the ceiling need some support
Posted 20 years ago2004-07-02 15:01:59 UTC Post #38315
the shadows would look better if you tweak the compile settings a bit
Posted 20 years ago2004-07-02 18:24:29 UTC Post #38353
It'd be cool if you could increase the resolution of the lightmap.
The only way to get a higher resolution is scaling the texture down, too bad.
Posted 20 years ago2004-07-02 22:01:42 UTC Post #38392
Dude Jahzel, thats nice, if you don't use that effect, can I have your permission to use it? I'll mess around with it, will probably look really good if you cannot see the ceiling. Of course, its too industrial for my taste, I'll probably end up replaceing everything with abstract textures to make it seem more like a dream.
Posted 20 years ago2004-07-03 01:46:28 UTC Post #38419
Hmm...how did you accomplish it? Looks like a little fog combined with a light_environment set as a sun with a special color, or some Spirit light FX?

Actually, to tell you the truth it was piss easy to do, and those shadows, I agree, are pretty strange. I didn't actually know it would look like that...

It's basically just a silly litte Spirit of Half-life experiment type of thing ;)

Oh, Just to say, I have a horror tutorial that goes through the basics of Horror is Half-Life. Check it out.

Coolfat,

can I help? I would like to do this stuff.

That horror tutorial rocks! :P

I read up on it before working on my zombies map. I'm trying to make it more scary because it isn't scary enough right now. :zonked:
Posted 20 years ago2004-07-04 23:13:10 UTC Post #38813
My maps haven't had much horror in them as they've been MP, CS and during they day in bright areas. Although with the recent arrival of the Natural Selection Beta, maybe I can change that ;) .

Hmm, real horror. This is highly unlikely, but did anyone go to Dreamworld on the Gold Coast (QLD, Australia) during the christmas holidays? Because they had a temperory attraction there, some Tomb Raider thing. NOW THAT WAS SCARY. Basicly just a really dark maze with light effects, and sound effects. Although the scariest sound effects came from the real people inside the maze which were ahead of you, screaming their lungs out, leaving you wondering whats ahead. They had some walls made of like net kinda stuff with real people wearing make up and a costume to make them look like monsters behind them. Whenever you walked past they would poke out and roar/scream at you. In fact, I saw one of them scare some people in front of us, so I said to him "I know you are there, so you better not scare me". Me of course being me, walked past without suspecting he was actually going to scare me. However, when I actually did walk past him, he screamed in my ear and scared the shit out of me, and the 'monster' started pissing himself laughing. Now i dont get scared very often, but HOLY CRAP, that was scary. It was designed by the worlds best 'scare-master' or something but god damn, that was scary. The least scariest bit was actually when a couple of japanese tourists accidently led us into the fire exit, and eventually to a dead end. Aren't they nice :)

Posted 20 years ago2004-07-06 09:47:20 UTC Post #39179
Actually, the screams they heard were most likely the men, women, and children being sacrificed by the underground reptilian race, reminds me of the story about the some-300 children, teachers, and guides who all went missing after entering a string of undergound tunnels in Malta. All of them went missing, not even one of them managed to escape. Apparently, according to the legend, their screams could be heard undergound throughout the entire Island.
