what do i do when i download a map
step by step where to place files etc. cos i just cant get it to play the maps

Well, its likely you'll encounter these files:

.bsp - goes in valve/maps - these are the actual playable level files.
.mdl - goes in valve/models - model files, like weapon and charachters.
.spr - goes in valve.sprites - 2D sprites, like glow's, and beams.
.wad - goes in valve - these files contains custom textures.

Thats all i can think of atm.

Sky textures go in the GFXENV folder, they are used in a lot of maps.

Sounds go in Valve/sound/map_name/name_of_sound.

Essentially the sounds for each map have their own folder unless they are native sounds. And the folder is called "sound", not "sounds".

This is not far off this subject, but those that know the ins and outs of .res files could do some a favor by adding a tutorial on manually building a .res file, using RESgen,etc. , and possibly packing a .zip file properly. None appeared when I searched and it would be a big help to newer mappers.

hey pepper im amazed ne1 remembers me lol
ive been away for about almost a year lol
still i dont think uve understood my Q
when i download from the map vault
1)where do i save the map to?
2)how do i open it once downloaded?
3)do i extract or nething?
4)do i place the bsps newhere?
just explain every thing step by step pls pls pls
