The time has come for me to stop learning to program Java and turn to the uninterneted, yet more powerfull, C++.

Are there any good places I can learn it for free, getting a compiler and such for free off the internet? I don't like to spend money, which is why I have a crappy Quantex with a broken internet that I'm not even using now.

don't ask what a Quantex is ;)

I was just wondering what anyone would say was the best way. I don't trust google to give me the best result. a person, or even a monkey, is more reliable to get me the best result. Google just looks at the words.

what can you DO with programing???
Thats a contender for stupidest post ever chow!

Let me brake down what programming is so I can explain to total noobs:

Programming - creating useable pieces of magic words that can be clicked on and make stuff happen on your magic light surface!

Real definition:

Creating pieces of code with a language that can be read by a compiler. It's main uses are creating programs. Obviously :P

chow, you can make mods with coding (the actual game rules, physics etc)
Posted 20 years ago2004-07-30 08:58:01 UTC Post #46666
you can make pretty much anything on a computer with programming. all your programs, microsoft word, half-life, even notepad, just to name a few, where made by programming.

The reason I want to learn Programming C++ is because thats the languange Half-Life uses and I can therefore change the code, makeing Half-Life do whatever I want. I could make a game where you couldn't walk backwards for example.

also, I need to get a free compiler. Where can I get a good one that won't screw up my computer?

You should try and learn assembler or machine code. Both are impossible! Assembler is ok though.

Nothing is impossible!
In the old days they built games with machine code.
Assembler is really powerfull, but extremely hard to master.

I can do a little bit of assembler. All it does it access memory addresses, nothing special about it.

Thanks for that link to the tutorial hefsys. I now know the basics of c++ coding, but heres the thing, is there a way I can learn more. Is there a way I can get into really advanced stuff with c++ now that I know the basics? for free mind you, I don't want to pay a million dollars to take a course on how to do it.

Thanks for that link to the tutorial hefsys.
That's okay BL. I also have some other stuff like a win 32 tutorial that might be of interest. Check this out:

You might want to visit the c++ home forums to get extra info as well.

Thanks a lot. I really want to learn C++, since it is what they made Half-Life out of.
