If any of you have ever modeled for NFS you probabley know what a .fce files is, but I was wondering if mdl and fce files are interchangeable formats.

No.

You'd need to decompile your FCS file into a generic raw model format, like dxf, and then compile that using studiomdl into a model file.

how would I go about making my fce file a dxf? Is there any software that you know of that converts a model to a generic raw model?

I'm not quite certain, since I never player/worked with NFS before. Check some of their modding/editing sites, you might be able to find some utility that could help you on that front.

Can MS3D open FCEs?

No, but I've noticed that both my FCE editor and milkshape can export to a 3D Studio file, could I export my fce to a 3ds file, then open it in ms3d and export it as a smd? And Is 3d studio freeware, are there trial copies, or do you have to buy it?
