What would people recommend for a laptop? ATI Radeon 9600/9700 or maybe an X600?? What's the difference between the 9000 series and the X00 ones anyhow? Cheers.

So the 9 series is better than the 10 series... okay. : I am getting a laptop so is there a big performance difference between a Radeon 9700 and a Mobility (ie laptop-designed) Radeon, both with 128mb?
Just a quick glance... According to the resolution, WXGA+ might be better for wide screen than WXGA.
And TFT means: Short for thin film transistor, a type of LCD flat-panel display screen, in which each pixel is controlled by from one to four transistors. The TFT technology provides the best resolution of all the flat-panel techniques, but it is also the most expensive. TFT screens are sometimes called active-matrix LCDs.

Err no, there is a X800 Mobility, but it hasn't been released to the general public yet. X800 cards are better than 9800's but X700(or maybe not)/X600/X300 cards are worse. If your on a budget, get a 9800 Pro, amazing price to performance ratio.

You can get X600 and X500 chips in laptops Riley, at least here in the UK. But I know now to avoid the X600, thanks dajuppi. That has narrowed my search down to two laptops, both with Mobility Radeon 9700 128mb. But I have a new question: which would you pick, between a Pentium 4 3.3mhz with 512mb RAM, and a Centrino 1.8mhz with 1024mb RAM?

Err, Pentium M's actually perform very well. Well, only ones based on the Dothan core. If Intel made a desktop chip based on the Dothan core, with a decent chipset (SATA, 800MhZ CPU bus, etc etc), that would be niiiiice.

too bad intel isnt that smart. they could have a 3.8 GHz P4 using the Dothan core and that thing would be fast as hell. i guess intel thinks longer piplines are better.

Well, a 3.8GhZ, ultra low pipeline CPU wouldn't work without extreme cooling. People have been overclocking Dothan Pentium M's with specially designed motherboards from DFI & a few other manafacturer though. Dothan's have the same pin count as the previous generation of P4's (S478), but the pinout is different, so it would probably damage the motherboard or chip to try it in a normal mobo. Just cos' it fits, doesn't mean it's correct!
