I was looking on this website about the Combine http://www.freewebs.com/benefactors/index.html
and I found two monsters described which I didn't see at all: a 'crab synth' and 'mortar synth' which were apparently found in the Citadel. What's going on?

I don't think you physically encounter them in the game. Could be wrong, but I don't remember seeing them properly. I saw a couple through television monitors and that though (In Red Letter Day, when you're teleported to Breen's office for the second time, he's speaking to a Combine in its true form).

POSSIBLE SPOILER!

I think I vaguely remember seeing them in the Citadel, when you are being taken along in the sort of coffin thingy that transports people, you pass over alot of creatures you don't see in the rest of the game.

I looked very carefully, and I don't think the Crab Synth or the Mortar Synth were there. I did encounter plenty of cool views of the striders and the gunships.

Nope, some of those synths are never there.

And how do they get this information about what they do?

Prob from leaked info from Valve. Or could it be from the book? I don't have the book, so I wouldn't know.

I think most of it's from the book they mention. Presumably then these 'synths' were dropped from the final version. Shame, that.
