After putting my new comp together, and loading up HL2 for the first time, I noticed that while running at 1024x960 or whatever, and lower graphics, I got 71fps constant, and likewise at MAX graphics. I would have expected either a higher low res fps or a lower high res fps? is there a reason? cheers

I don't know about HL2, but in HL1, the FPS is capped at something like 72. You can easily turn the cap higher with some command that I forgot. Maybe HL2 also has some something like this?

yeah, i know the cap is 72... you can change it by typing "fps_max #" but why bother? why limit the fps... surely the more the better ;)

however, I sort of solved my own problem about 2 minutes after posting, however, im still interested as to why you would want to cap it?

the limit is actually 300 by adjusting

btw, averaging 170fps at MAX and 1280x1024 on first water level... for those wondering ;)

For me, higher than 70 or so is almost too smooth. I just don't like the feeling of it. In fact, setting it to around 30 FPS gives it a cinimatic touch, which can look nice at times.

indeed :) the eyes can only see things up to around 60 fps anyways.. so anythign higher is quite pointless... your not even seeing 240 frames for the 300 in a second. Regular ole' tv framerates are at 30 fps also.

Actually, I can tell a difference between, say, 60 FPS and 100 FPS, although probably nothing higher.

This thread seems like an excuse to "brag" about a computer.......

sigh...

I get 200 + fps all the time.

Turn off the cap in your windows display settings.

The default max fps for HL2 is 300 if I remmeber correctly.

Yeah, I thought it was.

Having stupidly high frame rates just gives tearing (the screen showing two different rendered stages when you turn around quickly or something), and then when the FPS drops to something still perfectly acceptable, it'll feel nasty.

They know better than you do on this one.

The eyes can see up to 72FPS, so any higher could be considered a waste of resources, thus capping it allows the system to spend more resources to other processes.

Its called optimazation.

Some screens also allow a refresh rate of 72HZ.

I can notice if the FPS is higher than 72 FPS... I'm special! :)
