I know this ain't the best place to post, but I had trouble finding the correct search query, so I couldn't find any good results, even though there must be many.

On my old system I had 1.5GB of PC2700DDR Ram no problem. It had 2 slots, so there wasn't much to worry about.

However, now when I install the ram in the correct method / slots (as shown by my manual :) - yes, I did read the manual) However, my PC only detects 1GB. I have tried every other config, and have no idea. Both sticks are exactly the same except for size, and both work in other computers.

Also my graphics card keeps resetting, but that's for another day!! ARRRGHHHH.......

Well, clearly some oddity in that PC. Maybe a BIOS update would sort it.

its already got the lastest version. Thanks what I though immediately, but I got onto the ASUS website, and everything matched up. Its just baffling! Maybe I'll try removing the 1GB stick, booting up, then adding the other (not while on! :P )

Atm, my comps off anyway, turns my room into a sauna after about 20mins. Especially in this weather!

are you mixing ram modules?? something you should never ever do, go for 1 gig or 2 gig in equal sized chips but never anything inbetween
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-19 14:33:23 UTC Post #190837
yeah, ive heard that its not a good idea, but I know everyone does it... so it is possible. The manual [cough] also says that they can be mixed, as long as they are of the same latency, and ECC or NON-ECC, etc. I also want to avoid spending more money now, but its just annoying having more ram that isn't usuable

I doubt 'everyone does it' when its such a fundamental no-no of pc RAM

I'm highly backing up Job. You should settle for 1GB here.

its a 'no-no'?

Oh...... :)

how about 2GB with 1GB and 2 512mb. Id always rather upgrade than downgrade!

hmmm.... my mum has the same ram in her computer....
[sneaks off late at night to 'remove' some ram]

Some times the motherboard only supports a certain amount of RAM. Maybe it only supports 1 gig.

Run a memtest (Google for it).

thats still mixing RAM, you should only have modules of the same type and size

ok. the mb supports 4GB of ram (ASUS A8N32-SLI)

i will take peoples advice then, and use two 1GB sticks or 1.

And my final question, how much difference is there between PC2700 and PC3200? Cheers
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-20 06:09:34 UTC Post #190922
little for your intents and purposes, go for 3200 as its cheaper AS LONG AS ITS THE SAME AS YOUR CURRENT 1GIG MODULE!!
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-20 06:37:53 UTC Post #190924
cheaper? My current 1GB stick is PC2700 (333mhz) but I would have thought that PC3200 is better / faster.

1GB CT12864Z40B DDR PC3200 ? CL=3 ? UNBUFFERED ? NON-ECC ? DDR400 ? 2.6V ? 128Meg x 64
What does this mean? US $131.99

1GB CT12864Z335 DDR PC2700 ? CL=2.5 ? UNBUFFERED ? NON-ECC ? DDR333 ? 2.5V ? 128Meg x 64
What does this mean? US $131.99

From crucial.com, they're the same price but the 3200 has a faster clock core and slower cache latency. Just get another 2700, bigger numbers != better in everything, e.g. waist size, chance of heart attack within 5 years, etc.

damn, I hate upgrading! ;)

...especially when I pay for it!!
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-20 12:16:44 UTC Post #190994
YOu can get 2 different ram sizes (2700 with a 3200), but the 3200 will be as slow as the 2700.

hmmmm, might do that then, so when I upgrade my other stick, they will both be PC3200. ARRRGHh.... why does everything on my computer have to be so difficult!!!
Posted 17 years ago2006-07-20 19:51:19 UTC Post #191050
it isnt difficult, people just go out of their way to make it sound like it is. In real world terms a lot of stuff makes no difference whatsoever, but it does pay to heed stuff like 'never ever ever ever mix ram modules' when ram is so absolutely vital to the correct functioning of a system.

errrr.... right. Thanks!

I'll remove the 512mb then, and in a few weeks, get another one. Cheers all, and Jobabob!
