I can't find any water tutorials in the Source section of the tuts. Can somebody please explain to me how to go about making water? :D

no entities are required for Source water..

Create the brush you want to be your water, texture it entirely in nodraw.

Select your water texture, and place it on the top face only.

viola

edit:

Dont forget to add cubemaps so the water reflects the world

Are there ways to control, for instance, color or sediment in the water? or is that done using fog?

Thanks

EDIT: oh, and do I use the silver-looking water textures, or the blue-looking water textures?

The colour and clarity of the water is all handled via the VTF file.

Ahh... thanks. Is there a way for me to check these? And does the Valve Wiki is some sort of scale or preview that would give me a sense of what it would look like? Or am I too hopeful? :D

hey uh... i did exactly what you said and my water aint showing up
i tried everything and many different textures for the top face. its not rendering.

but when i shoot it it splashes.

i make a nodraw block, texure the top with a water texture and when i compile and run the map it doesnt render.. why?

You need a full successful VIS for it to show up. Check for leaks and things like that.

theres no leaks i know that for a fact.

Would it make any difference that im using a displacement brush along with the water? im trying to make a beach and its just not showing up....

i tried making another map and it worked fine but not this one...

remember, displacements dont act like world geometry. THEY WILL NOT PREVENT LEAKS

You have to seal off displacement areas.. it's like putting a func_wall in to prevent a leak.

Ok... i just replaced the 5 sides that werent displaced with the nodraw texture and now its rendering. I dont see why it worked, but it did.

Maybe the models have some parts sticking out of the map >> leak

Props are leaked out of the world. Turn RAD off and compile. Load the point file, and find the leak. Extend the walls that seal off the map to encompass the ends of the props to prevent leaks.

ok my computer hates me then.
I run css, open the map.
theres no water rendered yet it splashes.
i accidentally hit that little windows button near Alt and i minimize CS:S
When it comes back up the water is back.
WTF!?

Its a common graphical issue, at least, from what I have experienced. If that's what you have to do to get it to appear, then I guess that's what you'll have to do :D .
