We've had quite a few discussions about hardware cooling at TWHL, but none of them addressed specifically about the mechanism of CPU cooling. I want to take a little survey on everyone's CPU temp. I just replaced my old cooling fan with this one. I got this heat sink two years ago from my brother-in-law. He just gave it to me in brand new condition. It's so much quieter than the old one I had.

I'll start the survey with my ancient machine:

Athlon XP 3200+
Stock thermal paste (silicon-based)
Idle CPU temp: 50 C
Load CPU temp*: 57 C
Average RPM: 2200

*The CPU load condition was simulated after playing Half-Life 2 for 30 minutes. The temperature recorded was from the ASUS mobo sensor.

How hot are you?

Ive got the latest zalman sink on my 4200 x2 and even with the fan on the slowest speed the cpu never goes above 45. It did peak about 60 IDLE in the summer, but I was barely able to use my PC it was so flipping hot in the UK, stick-to-leather seat loveliness.

The airflow throughout your case with good placement of inlet/outlet fans is really important to a stable and low cpu temp.

I'm using this, as opposed to my old DELL-standard stuff. Works pretty well, I've never seen the temperature go above 55c, idle is about 50c (on an old Pentium 4). Since it's temperature controlled, I'm assuming it won't let the PC overheat. However, I only have one case fan. Oh well, it's been working so far, will get another when I can be arsed.

Im using http://www.arctic-cooling.com/cpu2.php?idx=80&disc=

Works like a charm, and extremely quiet. Clever, coz it blows towards outake fans! ;)

My cpu (4400+ x2 o'clocked 2.4ghz) is normally around 47celius idle, and 57 after HL2 for 1hr. I wana get a new case anyway, with much better circulation. Also, my wiring sucks!!! :)

As Jobabob said, ambient temperature definitely affects CPU temp, because it determines the temperature of the intake air flowing into the case.

When I measured the CPU temp yesterday, my room temperature was about 26 C (79 F).

Currently, my room temperature is 21 C (around 7 am in the morning), and the CPU temp is idling at 46 C (just browsing TWHL).

I figure as long as the CPU temp stays below 70 for an Athlon XP, there really is no reason to get bent out of shape about the temp. The official AMD requirement is below 85 C. Arctic Cooling recommends Athlon XP temps to be below 75 C.

Fifty-seven is fine. I've got an Athlon 2400+ clocked up to about a 3300+ sorta level, air-cooled with a nice big and under-volted Zalman sink and the case open. Very rarely gets above sixty in general use, and for gaming, I don my surround headset and crank the fans up.

Jobs: sixty is awful for a '64.

I have a mini case which runs at about 30c with a P2 (stock cooled) and 8 exterior fans

i sense a slightly loud computer?!

however, I drawl over many thermaltake cases that have around 8 fans in. They're beautiful!!!

lol....kinda.....but I'm never in the same room (it's in a closet serving as a file/print server) so noise is not a problem.

seventh the room temp was 91 degrees!

The moral of the story is that CPU temp readings are meaningless unless the ambient room temperature is also reported.

Currently, at 17:53 in the afternoon, my room temperature is 82.5 F (28 C). I have been at work all day, and my PC has been idling all along. However, the CPU temp reported by the sensor is 54 C.

When ambient temperature goes up by 3 degrees Celsius, the CPU temp increases by 8 C.

My 2.8GHz (o/ced) dualcore Opteron:
28C Idle
35C Load
No idea what my ambient temps are.

I thought you had a phase change?

I don't use it on my Opty, because:
1. I don't trust the mounting/insulation after what it did to my poor Abit IC7-Max3.
2. A64 coldbug.

It's practicly sitting around doing nothing. Bit sad really but I'm not putting it on another chip again until I get a new block/mounting for it. Condensation is ghey.

satch: low-level use. 47? CPU, 32? motherboard (north bridge?), 21? ambient.
