This isn't exactly an editing question so I don't know if this should go here, but anyway...

Today I reinstalled Half-Life 2 and after I started playing it I noticed these odd white boxes that seem to appear at light sources (lamps, scanners, etc.) and were visible through walls.

Last time I played Half-Life 2 I never had this problem, and my settings then were the same as the settings I have now (everything set to low, DirectX set to 70).

I have a 256 MB ATI RADEON 9200 PCI (not express) card, if that helps. 1.8 GHZ, 765 MB RAM too. And I'd prefer more than a simple "U NEED 2 UPGRADE LOL," please. I know I need to upgrade but I don't plan to any time soon.

That's all content that hasn't been redownloaded for the gfc yet. Wait a while and there should be srpites or something in place of those.

wow. i thought you couldnt play unless 100% of the files were downloaded?
Or is that the "Downloading Extra Files" stage?

I don't understand. Steam says HL2 is 100% downloaded and ready to go.

Delete clientregistry.blob!
That fixed it, but not for long. It's probably the configuration file I was using. After I deleted clientregistry.blob and ran half-life, everything was fine. Then when I had HL2 load my config file, the squares returned.

Is there anything in this config file that would cause problems?

Try removing them one at a time and see which it is.
