As easy as creating a dome? Created 17 years ago2007-12-14 11:39:43 UTC by R1Co R1Co

I want to create a dome and that thing should look kinda round - like most domes do.

Well I thought its easy:
  • create a sphere
  • cut it into half
  • delete one half and make the other hollow
First I had to learn that you can only build spheres with 16 faces. Okay, less than I expected but fine.

Now when I try to cut or hollow the sphere my Hammer throws an exception and closes or tells me "fatal error" and closes. With a sphere with 8 faces the hollowing worked but it's useless for my map.

Anyone else experiencing these problems with basic operations? Any helpful ideas?

You're lucky , if you have problems just ask me . I'm going to release a map sunday this week , and it is based on a dome .

Sheesh. Thats extremely badly done. Think of the off grid vertices.

There are better ways.

Thanx for the tip Striker but I've seen the video today, while searching for a solution, and I don't think this will serve my needs since my dome should have a nice spherical shape inside and outside.

So, what I wrote above ...
  • create a sphere
  • cut it into half
  • delete one half and make the other hollow
... should usually work, right?

I made a video just for you.
Enjoy it or i'll shoot you.

My method works with 6, 8, 12, and 16 sides.

I recommend not using a grid less than 4 units. There's a larget margin of error.

As long as you scale each successive ring by the same value for each side, this work beautifully. If you want, i can post another video of me making a dome with a larger number of sides.

It works the best when you have a perfectly symmetrical starting polygon.
That's the key.

Use Penguinboy's displacement generator (Twister), if you are doing this for Source. You'll have to generate two displacement domes. One for the outside surface and one for the inside. If you want to have a movable dome or something like that, then you really have no other choice than tedious brushwork or creating a model. With the Goldsource engine, displacements obviously aren't an option.

Good find Iron.
I kinda forgot about twister.
That magic little thing. :walter:

there's also a tut on the snarkpit, although that's really a moot point with Twister

Wow! Thanx for doing the video Tetsu0!! Although I didn't yet get all steps (since my Hammer version is different), I enjoyed it! :)

And thanx for the links ][R()N! Will look into that Twister thing now...

Well, ALMOST too easy with Twister. Thanx for the help!

I know right!? I want people to learn THE RIGHT WAY

I think i'm just gonna make these types of movies for other people to watch and follow!

I already made one for the metroid door i implemented in one of my other maps.

I'll try to get the quality a bit better next time.
