Im hoping to buy a new mtherboard for my computer soon not one too expensive just one to replace my PCI motherboard with PCI-e and I was wondering, I know there are two types of intel pentium 4 processors and some motherboards wont work with the older type of pentium 4 processors so is there a way of checking how old or what type of pentium 4 processor you have on your computer, thanks in advance

What's your current processor?

All CPU models need their own special motherboard socket, which is how you determine which mobos fit with which CPUs. Both AMD and Intel processors use a few different sockets.

Get a diagnostic program like CPU-Z to check your hardware. If you're gonna buy a new motherboard, consider getting a new processor too - you're likely to need one soon anyway.

On an old motherboard, they're likely both IDE connected. Newer boards come standard with SATA connectors (for HDD's, usually), but they also have IDE ports. Fewer though - my Mobo has 4 SATA connectors but only 1 IDE port, which makes connecting older HDD's a bit of a bother. It works though. I keep one DVD/CD drive and one IDE HDD connected through a single IDE cable. Makes for some odd positioning inside the computer though (my IDE HDD is lying unfastened ontop of the DVD drive :) ).
