DDR1 Ram?....AGP 8X Graphics?....Just 256 MB of Ram?
I see that we are talking about a PC that's at least 10 years old. It would help more if you were to provide the brand and model number of your PC, this way knowing the exact type of ram needed will be easier to find out.

He said DDR-SDRAM, which is the first generation of DDR (DDR1) so DDR 400 would do fine. And not quite 10 years old. A system of that configuration would be no more than 6 years old as 2.66GHz P4 models first appeared in 2002.

Basically, the max you could go with RAM would be 4GB, but the OS won't allow you to utilize it all. As for graphics, the absolute fastest you can get is an X1950XT, but that may not be worth the price.
Give us a maximum price range, and we can suggest upgrades that will fit in your budget.

Finding AGP cards is pretty hard nowadays. X1950XT is indeed the fastest (atleast to my knowledge) but you'd probably just end up with a bottleneck if you put that card in. Roughly speaking, your pc is only as good as the weakest component.
You may want to consider saving your money and buying a new computer instead.

I got an AGP card earlier this year--GeForce 7600 GS. It works, but I don't recommend spending money to buy that into 2009. It's just a waste of money.
I had to check the date of this post, just in case it wasn't a resurrected ancient thread.
