It seems like a pretty simple question, but I can't find a definitely answer.

Can my old Athlon Barton chip run Windows 7 64-bit? Does AMD Athlon 3200+ support a 64-bit OS?

The reason I am asking is that my old computer's HDD failed, so I bought a SSD for it (so I can re-use the SSD in my next build). I have to buy an OS also because I don't have the Windows XP installation disks anymore. Besides, I would like to migrate to Windows 7 instead of staying with Windows XP.

I accidentally purchased Windows 7 64-bit from Newegg without considering whether my Athlon Barton can run it.

I don't know for sure, but it sounds like a long shot. I know Athlon II's support 64 bit OS's but idk about Athlons, Newegg doesn't sell a single PC with one inside it anymore. What are the specs of the CPU, how much ram is installed? Knowing that would help immensely.

It's a moot point now. My ancient mobo does not recognize the SSD at all. ASUS stopped supporting this motherboard years ago, and the latest BIOS update was in 2005.

Time to buy a new computer.

If 64 isn't in the name of the chip, it isn't compatible.

I had a AMD Athlon 64 +3000 And it ran 64 bit fine.
