Perhaps your model you're trying to use is not in the game directory?
Are you sure you're using the correct entity?( prop_detail instead of prop_static?)

i think if you get an error in-game it's a path issue. (did you preserve the directory structure when you copy/pasted the model?) If it's simply not showing up (no error message) i just try every model entity till it works, e.g., prop dynamic, cycler, prop_detail, prop_static, etc.
)
What custom materials came with the model and where did you copy them to? I'm not sure exactly where you are supposed to copy them when you use custom models, but i remember copying my GM models to a materials folder for SDK and for CSS, but i don't know if that's necessary.

No, it's an illegal copy. If it wasn't, it would be in steam/steamapps, regardless of where steam was installed.
