I have the tutorial on sound from this sight but if I'm not mistaken, I can use 16bit mp3s now for gold source? Or is 16bit mono wav file the only option I got?

The only way to use mp3 files without custom code that implements fmod would be to replace the default HL soundtrack within the media folder. Both would require a mod format. WAV is your only real option for single maps, sadly.

My problem is I want to have a pair of sounds play together in sync without getting of track. But I don't think that, is possible. I have an area in a map that I did where there were 3-4 separate ambient generics of the same sound file and it created a nice stereo effect but it did not always play in sync even though it was the same sound file....

You can mirge two or more .wav files...
If your using Windows XP i dont know for Windows 7 but in system32 there is a file called "sndrec32.exe" (system32/sndrec32.exe)
Open it than
Click "EDIT" after that click "Insert file.."
When you did that find your .wav files.
After that again click "EDIT" and than click "Mix with File" but if you want to go -(sound -> next sound -> next sound) than click "Insert file.."

After that just save files.

CLICKK!!!!! xD

WON HL does not support mp3, only wav. Also, sounds only play while you are within range (unless they're set to "play everywhere"), and as soon as you walk further away they'll stop. They'll continue where they left off when you come back, so it's not too hard for everything to end up off sync.

Well it took a day or so but I finished my sounds. They sound great. My map has simulated stereo while many others do not. Big plus.

Also, just to add this info - 44kHz 16Bit Wav will play perfectly.
