Come on chums, let's do dis!

Seriously, let's do this. =)

I wish the world's governments placed more of an emphasis on exploring/developing space. Until then, we have nuts like this to give us hope ;)

How did you imagine this project? Just the outside of the enterprise spase ship, or the interior?

Or both separate :D

Source, right?

We need a list of things we need, then how much space they take up. Like water purification and storage, food, power, etc. then arrange it in a way that's applicable... at least I guess that would work...

Like I know anything about rocket surgery.

I used to design and build model rockets, lathe their engines out of duraluminum and cook the propellant...

Also, this design is unrealistic. It must spin in one way or another to produce gravity... You guys should make your own, new design...

Ya i was just kinda shocked to see the site and thought the main idea was neat, though tbh the guy hasn't really done much(not that it's an easy project to tackle).

I think our space organizations should be building some sort of inter-solar spaceship right now and make it a priority. I'd be willing to pay an "enterprise" tax to fund it, but i'm sure a lot of people would cry about it..

Bruce: those sound like some serious rocket motors you were building! (you have any pictures?) Mine were only built out of cardboard and balsa wood, with the standard c and d rocket engines you could buy..

i see now at the hobby store they sell some serious "movie grade" rockets i would love to play with someday.

Oh and about the gravity, the guy says he has designs for some sort of gravity wheel to create something close to 1g gravity..

That website is bugged, besides build a more good looking ship rather than this.

I love the FAQ.
A: If someone can convince me that it is not technically possible (ignoring political and funding issues), then I will state on the BuildTheEnterprise site that I have been found to be wrong. In that case, building the first Enterprise will have to wait for, say, another half century.
Q: But you don’t even work at NASA – or in the space industry.
Well there's your problem. :D

If were going to design our own space craft, we need to decide what type of the craft should we be designing, what components could such a craft contain and how to design those components and in the end its look.

This could be a pretty awesome project.

I believe that the the first space craft would look like either two things: a saucer, or a giant version of the space shuttle.

An odd note, I saw an international mail air freighter on an airport along the way to the hotel im currently staying at. i couldn't believe how big it was and it was surprising. Later I thought that a spaceship would be 10 times that with all of the necessary things aboard.

I think it would be much more fun to make something that was constructed in space and not blasted off of Earth (or a planet).

Bruce put a picture of a nice orbital station.

But i get what are you trying to say Rim, something simple for starters.

Bruce: pretty cool pic. does the whole ship rotate about it's "y" axis?
we need to decide what type of the craft should we be designing
that is a toughie. at least in terms of style, i dig both the functional design of the first alien movie's ships, though i also love the refined, super-futuristic, and very comfy style of 2001(Arthur C. Clarke) ships and stations.

Though being a full-on trekkie at heart, it's hard not to want an actual enterprise; it's every trekkie's wet-dream ;)

I see, well, we should consider building a space ship other than Enterprise one day :)

I think we have the thought power to think it fully and project.

That spaceship is kinda strange, i mean, one hit to that bridge there and the whole thing will fall apart.

I always liked the idea of realistic space ships, thick armor, suppression fields and stuff like that.
I always thought a space ship needs engines on multiple places, not just on side/back/front.
Of course, looking cool is all that matters in the end, but still :P

I love that ship too Trempler, great designs inside and out, even if we don't need eyes where we're going ;)

Agreed stojokens, making anything more realistic makes it more believable, espeicailly with scifi/spacships in particular ;)

more great ship designs

First find out if static gravity generators are possible, if not, then you must make it a spinning one...

About the purpose? If you want to make it scary, some big, old cargo or military spaceship would work. And of course, you could draw tons of inspiration from normal cargo, military, cruise ships (water ones), submarines, etc.

actually, come to think of it, i never minded much of the star wars ship designs. I thought they seemed applicable and necessary. A star destroyer would probably be the right size and design for the kind of stuff we need. Glad you posted that one.

I take design from nature a lot. I think anything spherical could work. Being a sphere, you could slowly rotate the ship or parts of the ship to get the gravity. Possible, instead of pulling to achieve gravity, we can always push. perhaps a frequency of some kind pushes down on things from above on the ship?
