Cool, okay, that topic should make people look. Okay, I'm having a problem with Steam and I'm wondering if anyone can help.
I want to install third party modifications to play, but there is a number of problems. I list them below.

1) I don't have a SteamAppsricht@email.com. I have a username folder instead of my e-mail. I don't know if this is a problem, but I thought I'd list it anyway.
2) After I regged with Steam, I used my CZ key to download Counter-Strike, and only Counter-Strike. But, this was put in iameyeless/counter-strike/cstrike. The counter-strike folder looks like the half life folder because it contains the valve directory.
3) I can't seem to find a way to download HL from Steam, as it tells me to on the modification website.
4) I tried installing half-life to a my main user directory but that didn't work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou very much.

It helps to have a descriptive topic name.

The @ in the SteamApps username is actually a problem, so it's good you don't have one of those older accounts.

Steam is installing Counter-Strike to the correct folder. You see, it stores base game content in it's own cache files (GCF) which are in steamapps, and then all customized content, mods, etc, are stored in steamappsaccountnamecounter-strikecstrike or half-lifevalve or something. Your Cstrike dir is where all custom maps and content need to go, valve is just there because it's a HL-engine based game.

To install Half-Life, just right-click the Half-Life Lambda icon shown in your "My Games" list and click "Install Game" from the contextual menu that pops up. Wait for it to download, and then you're good to go.

Right, if I were you I'd download this to begin with:

Download meh!

Run that, go through the motions, either log in with your old account (if you can remember the username and password), or try to create a new one; seeing as you're having some trouble with it you may not have properly registered (you hope).
Try one of those until you get success (bear in mind there will be some "updating") and can get a little box that looks like:

Now click on Counter-Strike and it will ask you if you want to instal blah blah, you don't need any retail Half-Life installed, but it can speed up the proccess as "Steam" converts the old files to the GCF form. If yoou don't have anything installed it just downloads it (note: most of the CS stuff has to be downloaded anyway so...).

Now go through this proceedure untill you have Half-Life, Day of Defeat, Codename Gordon, Condition Zero (install your copy prior to 'download'), and even Counter Strike: Source (whoop-de-doo).

When you're done you can start (or even skip all that and go straight to:) installing Thrid Party Games.

To install something like, oh I dunno [url=www.hostileintent.org]Hostile Intent![/url] you just download their installer, run it and it will (with any luck) install it to SteamSteam Appsyour accountHalf-Life_ _ _ _, the gap being the name of the 3rd party mod.

I'm going to uninstall and reinstall, though. See if it works then, after I've got HL in. I hope it copies. :'(

no no no, trust me man, seriously, if you're having problem,s just do it that wya, get the Steam installer and let it download, Steam (teh steam installer) is 600kb (absolutely tiny) the biggest thign is Counter Strike at 136MB ish.

You'll be wasting ya time re-installing, and you might f**k up your CD Key

And what is Codename Gordon, by the way?

It's a 2d version of HalfLife, you have the option to download it through Steam, it's about 50MB

Well, I totally uninstalled and re-ran the 600kb installer I got with Condition Zero. Updated again, logged in with my old account. It doesn't ask me about games. My play games window comes up and all the games are blacked out. If I click on games under the My Games tab it gives me the option to install them, but HL isn't there. Hold on for a sec, I'll get a screenshot.

You sure HalfLife isn't there? I had to download it and it was there, just double click the blacked out game, and download, CS is a stand alone mod, so you don't need any HL products to run it, if youi want HL it's there, just look harder

And I meant he should open the steam installer, and go through the motions, it seems as if he's got this far, so all he/you have to do is strat downloading the games, if you;ve gotten as far as the Play Games window, you can download games...

I hope there's a genuine reason that your Steam is playing up, because I have a friend who is also completely f**king useless at this kind of thing.

Reading the installation guide is like, way too much effort for him, not saying you're like that, but just warning you I have no patience for inbreds, how about you give us a couple of creenshots, so we can see exatly where the problem is?

I looked at his screenshots and they actually do not appear to feature HL.
