There is an animated PNG format, and most decent browsers support it too, can't remember the name of it though.

Oh just remembered, the animated PNG extension is MNG. Atom can just filter for MNG like he can with other extensions.

PNG > JPEG. PNG's have very little artifacts even with lot's of compression. Plus, they are quite small, and have transparency.

Ok, PNG avatars are now supported.

They can be 10 times bigger than their JPEG counterparts, so if you're on a dial-up, you might like to turn avatars off (see your profile).
