I was wondering if it is possible to open the actual levels in half life 2 so I could get a working ball spawner. Is it?

No.

There are some SDK SP example maps which may help, look at the first Citadel one they included.

well, I had to figure out by myself how to do scripting sequences. The example trainstation vmf is very confusing and takes ages to load
I always have the impression that half the entities valve uses are not really neccesary... :

And, some technically are. They aimed for perfect maximization - Using more clip brushes instead of VPhys props, lots of triggers to do things one could do otherwise, etc.
