Hammer was working fine until recently. it gives me this message "failed to initialize texture system"
i reinstalled and guess what? same message...i think valve was stupid to intergrate SDK and Hammer into Steam.
i hate Hammer :x

I got this in Hammer beta ;D
Try refreshing content/reinstalling SDK. I got it when my material system DLL went AWOL.

I hate Hammer 4.0 too but sometimes life is unfair and you just gotta keep trying!

Have you tried refreshing the sdk content? Sometimes there are just bugs and a refresh might sort it. Ever that of try looking at the Hammer options and see if there are any errors in that.
