What .wad files are used for cs and cs:cz?
Posted 19 years ago2005-03-27 15:21:02 UTC Post #99435
Quite a few actually!

The Main ones are

cstrike.wad
and cztrike.wad

Custom maps such as de_dust use their own wads e.g. de_dust.wad

You can get them all from the wad directory of CS!

de_dust was the first map to use the defuse system in counterstrike, and davej made it as a offcial map, he was in the cs dev team when he created it.

While we are talking about Dave...
I strongly suggest that all our members read the articles on the making of de_dust at Johnston.co.uk

Never know... you might learn something ;-)

That guy is truly amazing.

He made de_dust which is very popular and also gave him attention because EA and other companines like Valve asked him to make levels :o

This is funny actually because de_dust wasn't the most detailed map in the world but it was most popular for mysterious reasons.
My point is that if somebody makes a remake of dust then it isn't loved as much even if it is more detailed!

Now that lucky guy got great opportunites for making a few maps. Why can't we get lucky like he did huh?

That is what confuses me and it makes me sad :(

It was simplistic, not a maze. That made it easier for players to learn the layout, unlike something like de_torn, where it goes in all different directions (think they mention that about your layout in DaveJ's "Common Sense vs. Level Design").

Indeed, he mentions it in the article you said.
And its a really nice guy, he helped me on the way wiht learning to texture from scratch.

The reason de_dust was popular was that either team could win, there was no advantage. New players could join the map and within seconds understand the lay-out. It was fun...

Because remakes are rip off's, Detail means nothing if the map is not fun.

When Dave made Dust, there were only a handfull of sites dedicated to producing maps. Back then almost all new maps were reviewed by the major sites, the community was small.
You can get lucky.. you just have to figure out how to get all the servers to run your map. :-)

Yeah... murder all the other mappers and you will be famous. I think that's the message here.

Very interesting article, though, especially saying that it was all nicked from TFC :).
