You may all of seen the pictures from my map I am working on, well I just pressed Ctrl+S to save the level and my computer crashed, ah no problem, I though. restarted and now 75% of the map has dissapeared and has turned into hundreds of "invalid solid object".

This is nearly a weeks work here, has anyone got any idea on how I can fix this?!

I had this happen before on another large map, and I didnt find how to fix it then, please please please someone tell me they know a way to fix this!

I really feel for you... had this happen to me.
I now save twice, to two different filenames and alternate which one I save to.
Maybe try that in future?
Good luck recovering it!

How do I recover it?!

The .VMX is a clone of the .VMF if you're in Source, and the .RMX and .MAX are the equivalents for HL1 mapping. Back them up, and then try opening them.

Crisis aborted.

ZOMG I am so happy there is a backup created every time you compile.

It's "averted", not "aborted" :).

Glad it's sorted.

This just tells a lesson!
Everyone make copies!
Store extra vmf's in folders!
Hm and if you lose it then try the .vmx and if you can't get that to work then open the .vmf in notepad and delete what you think may have caused it to go poo poo!

Or you could just use the backup .map created every time you compile like I did.

keep regular backups of your work - and train yout left hand to press CTRL+S at every few brushes..

THe important thing there is to keep those backups safe.. on a separate drive someplace.

Zip Disk would work best.

Small,
Easy to store.

The new SDK beta saves your work if it crashes so if you open it again it starts off where you last left off, really handy.

I'll never give up me ZIps!!!

... til they stop making them comaptable, which will obviously not happen until a new super consol computer replaces our Personal Computers, rendering any device we use now useless ...

This has never happened to me...in years..hmm. Maybe you all have something wrong with your computers?
Posted 18 years ago2005-12-04 19:39:06 UTC Post #150463
Haha those Zip Disks remind of N64 cartridges...
I don't blame you, I use old things also like the common VCR, someone I believe on Snarkpit made a topic about their son not knowing what a VCR was and calls it old, ha I love the good ol videos.
