For those of you who own airsoft guns/BB guns, or know a lot about them, if you shot someone in the leg with a BB, it would hurt them, right? Also, could you actually kill someone with a BB gun? Because I saw these cool-looking airsoft guns, and I'm afraid to even consider buying one because of the hazards they might cause.
Posted 19 years ago2005-12-07 22:57:00 UTC Post #150999
Metal BBs can be hazardous, in a sense that if you shoot them it may break the skin. But airsoft guns use platic BBs, they sting, but don't break the skin unless you are like 2 feet away and even then its just a scratch. So, yes, they are safe(assuming you don't get shot in the eye, ouch :zonked: always wear a mask or goggles)

Contradictory to what I said before, be careful if you are handling an airsoft gun with roughly 400 fps(feet per second) or higher, because those things are serious and really can cause some damage. but most guns are between 180 and 350.

This may be an idiotic question, but are there guns that shoot foam BBs or something to that nature?

Well, now that I think of it...foam or any equal material would be difficult, if not impossible, to fire out of a gun effectively.

They make paintball BBs for airsoft guns but they can't be found in stores and are hard to find online and they break inside the gun and jam it anyway. Normal plastic BBs are fine, trust me, its like being flicked in the arm by a strong person.

Well thanks for the info, but I don't think I'll be buying an airsoft gun. My aim sucks so bad I can't hit a clay pigeon nailed to a tree 10 feet away from me.

Well, theres a pellat like this:

Which are plastic.

Then theres:

Which are metal. (and a lot smaller)

If you have a gas gun, just get plastic, or if you want to hunt with them, get metal.

If you just want to have fun, get plastic. Dont hurt and wont cause injury if not shot at the face.

JUST REMEMBER:
BB GUNS ARE DANGEROUS!

I have two questions: Do you have to have a permit to own an airsoft gun? And what's the little orange tip on the gun for? Does it prevent the gun from firing?

@Crystalman: I think it's obvious airsoft guns hurt if you're not wearing the right protection.
Posted 19 years ago2005-12-09 15:22:35 UTC Post #151302
OMG! Yes it will hurt them, a little bit for a short time... Kill someone with it? omg... dude!
Posted 19 years ago2005-12-09 15:31:32 UTC Post #151303
I believe the orange tip is there so people can see that it is an airsoft gun and not a real one.. at least that's what i always thought :P

I have an airsoft gun, a deagle

No you don't need a permit for own an airsoft gun. They say you have to be over 18 but its a load of crap, anybody can buy them.

The orange tip has to be on the gun by law to distinguish it from its real counterpart, as Sari-bo-berry said.

One more question: I was thinking of maybe buying an airsoft (more than likely a pistol) and possibly shoot targets with it, since I'll be comforted knowing that if I miss and hit someone, I won't kill them. Can the plastic bbs go through paper targets? I know it's a dumb question, but I just want to know.
Posted 19 years ago2005-12-10 00:36:47 UTC Post #151425
yes they can. that's the point, isn't it? How else would you know where you hit?
Posted 19 years ago2005-12-10 00:44:40 UTC Post #151426
Well, I personally thought, since the BBs were plastic instead of metal, they wouldn't have a higher velocity and they wouldn't go through the paper. Bah. I'm not very bright when it comes to science.

You're being way to cautious about this. Buy a gun, shoot yourself in the foot. Done deal, eat your tacos.

Yeah. They're not lethal weapons, or they wouldn't be sold as toys.

kinetic energy = mass/2 * velocity^2

force = mass * acceleration

With either type of gun, you can still lose an eye by it.

I've been working in the ER long enough to know that without protective goggles, they can maim.

yes, if you're shooting anything, use goggles. Personally, I like the co2 powered bb guns, they're lots more dangerous, but the're very powerful.

Ever try paintball?t That's alot more fun!
