What is with our maps these days? Every map is for CS, and don't get me wrong, it's a great game, but to be honest, a lot of those maps won't ever get a look in - compared to some of the stuff on the servers.

There are only so many times something can be done before it's just boring, and we haven't had any original half-life maps. You know, the ones where you dl and just... play on your own.

Basically... what Im trying to say is... can't we have a bit of a change for a while, and actually map for the 'original game'... HL.

Sorry if this has / will annoy anyone, but just had to get it out of my system. I know a few people on this site who feel the same, and just wanted to express my opinions.

It is true that most CS maps will never be looked at. But maybe the people who make them actually play them with bots or something... We just can't decide what other people map...
By the way, you havent submitted any maps in almost a month ;)

it's not about working quickly etc, different people work at different paces, although the results are still good. also, being slower could mean more thorough work, more thought gone into it...

What happened to all the Source mappers? :P I know Ant maps for source but most people are going for HL and etc.

Anyway while we are all pimping our projects I'll pimp mine;

A stargate map. Check my journal for more info.

I always want to perfectionize my maps, wich obviously is a big problem when your working on competition maps.

I'm attempting a HL2dm map, as you can see in my journal.

I'm taking a break from mapping til' the Next HL1 compotition...

I've been doing some nice interior work to my space ship thing...

I'm probably going to just shorten it, leave it without a storyline, and post it as a map-pack...

Submit it unfinished and you might win if not many people participate, it's happened before.

These days I don't really map for HL anymore, I still work on my dm map every now and then, but generally I stick to Enemy Territory and Quake 3.

I, of course, am too busy with college and other real life stuff to map and code, so TWHL itself takes priority over mappin' :).

On that note, I've done the login code and some related functions for TWHL3 now. Coming along nicely.

I've been doing more programming/schoolwork/web design lately than mapping, I haven't really had the time.

Are you talking about multiplayer deathmatch or solo missions ?
If you are talking about dm, could you tell me what is for you an original map ? ...

single player... HL... no mods, no online... just plain 'ole but never-the-less EXCELLENT Half-life. We've got so caught up in throttling our m8s online that the offline single-player game is getting forgotten.

Looking back through the vault, you can see that, at the beginning, 99% of the maps here were for 'basic HL' then, gradually, as new mods continued to pour out, (and ideas ran fewer and fewer?!?) DM and CS maps started to take over, and well... enoughs enough!

Yeah they'll great... but it'll never beat that sensation and thrill as you run around a corner and come face to face with a full-loaded and pissed grunt, or along a deserted corridor only to have it collapse and for you to land in a room of zombies! This is what HL is about... the thrills, spills, and actually trying to accomplish an objective, rather than playing the same CS map for 2 hours... proving that you are really better than tom, dick or harry!

...there I go again. sorry guys.

I couldn't agree and disagree with you more:

After you've bee through a singleplayer once or maybe twice, why would you play it again? Once you master the fun puzzles or techniques to kill a monster, it's quite boring, no offense.

Multiplayer games are much more dyamaic, depending on who's playing and how many players there are. I've played cs_assault probably thousands of times, and it's different every single time.

My 2 cents.

meh... good point. it just annoys me that people nowadays are concentrating more on online mods, rather than create maps with storylines, puzzles, and the cooler stuff that can only really be done in HL... you're right 'bout that though rowleybob, prob just got little carried away there!!
Posted 18 years ago2005-12-17 21:31:38 UTC Post #152938
Don' get me wrong either, I love SP mods too. Take something by Tlax for example. His stuff is amazing, and also I'm sure takes a massive amount of time and work and headaches with bugs.

But It doesn't matter how good it is if no-one ever plays it, or plays it once and forgets about it :(

Maybe stuff like Sven Coop is the future, bluring the line between MP and SP... I've never played SC, but it's on my list of "mods to try" :)

Single player mapping usually requires more level detail, ambience and to master a lot of entities, such as scripts and npc actions. It is much more time consuming. And like rowleybob says, it will probably be played once or twice by the same person.
Multiplayer mapping allows you to share your work with other people. Nothing beats the feeling of playing other people in one of your maps. The thrills and chills of HL have to be looked for in new games.

I for one like SP a little bit more than MP because when i first got half-life i had the net but i was alot more of a little kid and dident know how to get the patch for half-life and just loved fighting aliens down in black mesa, and grew to likeing the labs so thats my style of mapping (even if i don't do it too well) And well playing SP for a few years with no other maps only BS and op4 (Yes i dident have the origional) Kind of gets you used to playing by yourself with only The npcs, which never got me very good at playing half-life which is why i suck at sven coop and MP.Another reason is, I never have someone I know playing , I do occasionaly play sven coop with elon but thats it, most of the people who play on steam are very annoying and kick someone if they don't move for 2mins.There are some nice people on there who are older, and are good at the game. But i only ever see one of them a week.I guess i would like it better if there were more people from TWHL playing at the same time i do but thats never going to happen unless we orgonise it(which would be great). And yes i would love to see more SP mods/maps around that are good in all aspects of it. Well thats all i have to say. (sorry if i repeted myself :P)

Sigh, not another SP versus MP argument. It takes far more effort to create a decent DM map than a quick Black-Mesa style alien blaster. However, it requires immense skill to create a good SP map.

Righto, sport.
So the moral of this story is nobody cares about whether you make an SP map or an MP map, just sit your butt down and compile something.
Even though its not really the moral you should be compiling so if you read this you are contradicting your purpose. Contradicting your purpose leads to living on the street which leads to lung disease and eventually a horrible death.
