de_minestorm by doggybag71

This is my entry for compo 31. It is CS 1.6 defuse map similar to de_nuke, cs_assault and maybe cscz_downed.

I wanted to make a map with good:
  • game-play, so that people would like to play it more than once.
  • story / visuals, to have a reason or explanation to why the map looks like it does and of course to make it look good.
  • r_speeds, this will make the map enjoyable for many players at the same time which is what CS is all about.
These above points is what I feel all good and popular CS maps have in common. I'm not saying that this map have all this I'm just saying this is what I aspired for.

The setting:
A rainy afternoon some terrorists or activists of some kind set out by boat to a small mining facility.
Their objective is to piss off the people working there. So they aim to sabotage the goods in the factory or the mining-train-chart-redirecting-platform in the cave-mine.

Little did they know that the mining workers actually also are working as counter-terrorists and that they had just developed a new way of mining. Mining with guns and ammo. Aw yeeees, I mean shooting the walls 'till stuff drop out. So they, the terrorists, are up for some heavy resistance, however they too are armed up to their neck-ties.

_OBS_
There are some annoying clipping errors (close to T spawn) that I want to fix and I want to lower the r_speeds in some points. I will make an optimized version of this entry.

Interesting DE_ map, i like it. It reminded me of a map i used to play as a kid in cs 1.3.

Wow excellent enrty!

++very thoughtful construction throughout
+great use of the texture pack!
+very good and varied brushwork, and vm in most places
++superb de layout near as i can tell
+nice use of sounds
++Some very nice/varied lighting in most places

+/-lack of small detail in most areas, but they are still adequete. I can't really critisize too hard, since my entry had NO small detailing whatsoever!
=)

No real minuses that i can think of, except maybe some areas seem a little too generic or simple, but it's evened out my the nice areas. i didn't check the wpoly, but i'm assuming they are very low, since everything was very smooth runing.

small bug i found was on the small rocky path by the boat, there is a clipping error where you get stuck and have to jump, even though the "floor" looks smooth.

Superb work sir! A very good contender indeed imo. 5 stars for a top-quality entry sir.

I loved your map sir, and quite frankly i'm shocked you didn't place! ='(

I thought the judges were a bit too critical on the size of your entry, and personally, that's one of the things that impressed me most. The only downfall of that of-course is that you require a lot more time and work to detail it all.

btw, did you build the map from scratch or retexture an old one? Damn impressive if you built this entire thing for the contest.

If i could double-rate your entry sir i would! Again, really great entry.

Thank you kind sir, I deeply appreciate your kind and honest words :). I'm glad you recognized the hard work I did and the thought I put it in to this.

I did it all from scratch :). I got really stressed towards the end to finish it because I wasted some weeks in the middle to play CS and I had a lot of compiling trouble due to some "complex" terrain.

I was really hoping for a top 3 place, who wasn't hehe, but yeah. Everyone likes different things, too bad for me I didn't appeal to the judge(s)'s likings. But I can't help but feeling a bit disappointed.

I do understand that my entry is not very special really, it just another standard type of CS map. Even if it's well executed it doesn't really bring anything new to the table.

I actually tried playing this map with players and bots and it works out quite good. It is not too big IMO.

Anyways, thanks again and congratulations on the victory. I'd love to see more of the map you did in a more finished state :P even more so in a SP-edition.
