Penguinboy PenguinboyHaha, I died again!
On very rare occasions, you find something so perfect on the internet that you can sit there, staring at it for hours, and wonder how the fuck something filled with so much fail (see: youtube, 4chan, SA, etc) can produce something so awesome.

I experienced this yesterday, researching something for my new programming project. This article on parsing .MAP files and creating faces suitable for 3D display is the most awesome thing I have seen all year.

I have no idea how much time this has saved me, but I put it in the ballpark of: fucking ages. I've mirrored it on my kkore space for presevation; the original host is dead, and I was lucky to find it with google.

Anything that helps you code your secret project (?) is win to me. That article is actually kind of interesting, when I bypass some of the technobabble. I'm sure there's some things in there that will come in handy.

Indeed. I haven't touched upon the texture stuff yet, but it's very comforting to know that it's there.

Ah very interesting to see someone wrote a nice guide for it. I remember the first time I opened a vmf in notepad and had to change some things because of a Hammer glitch that made me almost lose my map.

Amazing. How'd you end up stumbling upon it?

Also, this is quite a decent read. Could use archiving as well.

Really great stuff. I've also found the Unofficial Quake 1 specs to be quite useful for developing Goldsrc tools, since the file format differences between HL1 and Q1 are pretty minimal.

Both nice finds, thanks for linking.

@Daub: I was googling around for some resources and found a thread on the gamedev.net forum linking to the original source. It was dead, so I googled the filename and found it sitting in some random folder listing.
