So who remembers the first time they set up Hammer, and how daunting it was :) Did you pour over the instruction help file and cautiously follow every step? I know I did...

I remember getting really excited, thinking "Holy crap I can build WORLDS".

Then I couldn't even figure out the setup and ragequit.

...yeah. :<

Me too. I found a tutorial somewhere, can't remember where, and followed it. Then little by little I learned how to map.

Built a level without knowing how to do anything, made what looked like a warehouse and put in prefab brushes like the step ladder and then when trying to figure out how to play it, rage quit.

Then summer came and tried again which worked with a test box level, following a guide.

So I like my warehouse and continue on it only to accidently apply the green slime texture to everything. Not sure how to fix, I had fucked it up and deleted it.

That was my experience.

I mapped for a month without being able to run the maps in-game. I was fascinated being able to create stuff in 3D. I built a bunch of stuff without paying any attention to the scale. There was a tutorial in the Worldcraft (at the time) help files on how to set it up. I tried several times to do so. Eventually I got it and ran through my maps. Some of them errored out and couldn't run, and a lot of them turned out like Rats maps because they were so big. Took me even longer to make a levelchange to work. At that point I made several linking maps that went on for a long time. At least a good hour of random HL action, and got into puzzle elements with crates and switches rather quickly for gameplay purposes. Sadly, the harddrive with that stuff on it is long gone. My next challenge was to make new graphics which ultimately brought me to TWHL. It was m0p who helped me in IRC to get things working. About at that time, summer had arrived and me and a friend went to a place in a nearby mall every weekend to play Counterstrike in a big LAN shop. There were always people there, and I had offered to make simple and fun map for the shop. I made some really fun ones, most of which are still in my Maps gallery here on TWHL. I've been hooked on mapping and 3D stuff ever since.

The End.

I somehow figured out how to get textures but not anything else (Try mapping with no ents D:) and make terribly huge maps.
Never saved a single one, as I saw it as practice for source. (back when I had the delusion that I could actually GET the source SDK on dialup)
Made some bad maps once I had a FGD, all of which are deleted. I made a CS map, a few TS RP maps, all of which sucked, made a "Terrorists attack the building you're a security guard in" mod which only got a few levels through, then I found Spirit 1.7 unofficial build. screwed around with that for a while, making a prison mod. Somewhere in between getting a HL1 FGD and getting Flatlife I made a testing map for ent setups and faction testing. I'm sure you all remember how that went when I uploaded it. :P

I think I've had 5 failed mods, one of which ran off another mod I was working on (lol, that was my crappy stargate mod) and two of which were failed versions of what would evolve into Colony 42. I hope I have a solid concept this time, I've definietly come farther than all the other's combined.

How did this start? ...Oh yeah, setting up hammer for the first time. No instructions with hammer, so used a (TWHL?) tutorial. Very first time was just wads, and I think I played it by ear.
