People call it Vulcans cause it's easier that way, but his username is actually "vluzacn". I might compile a list of changes he's made to the tools in the future, I've been talking to the guys on those forums for a while, finding out about all the new entities and features he added, I'll pass that knowledge to you guys a bit later on.

Don't forget the fact that with VHLT ur map's size is also 50% smaller, and you can add entities like func_detail. Btw you're just finding out about vhlt? D:

A question just crossed my mind, are there any rules against testing the gameplay of my map before the competition ends, to improve it? Is there nothing stopping me from getting a server up with the beta version of my map and then taking what I've learned from that to improve gameplay and do better in the competition?

I'm not saying I will do this, but I want to know, if this is allowed or not.

whats an es_ map? and yeah oilrig was very very depressing, and the whole vip thing was a cool idea but I guess nobody liked it. Either that, or the only map that had it was very depressing :D.

Well if you had to choose a sunny warm desert map or a metalic oilrig in the middle of the ocean and to add to that the sun has nearly set so it's dark and you can hear a lot of wind... It's an obvious choice.

No... I think the rules are that you take the theme, and recreate it. There are no medieval town maps for cstrike, so there is no such theme. The only thing closest to that is maybe de_storm.

I am going to do a Havana theme (I love that theme ever since I did that sea side map). I will start with a completely new layout though, and It will be set in a slum area of Havana with many compact buildings rather than the Big central city areas like in the original havana map. I think I will use same textures as havana in cs, but I might import the css ones or something.

Yatta! This is really good. But I have one question I must get straight:

Am I remaking the theme, or the map itself?

Uh how do I explain. I know I must remake a map from counter-strike, but what are my limitations? What if I create Havana for example, but this time I recreate it with a completely different layout than the previous map, creating something like Havana 2 instead. Will that be an acceptable map since it's the same theme as Havana? Will there be no problems with the fact that it has a completely different layout?

My college tutor who teaches me 3D Modeling has put together a youtube channel with various tutorials on 3DS Max Modeling. If anyone is interested, or needs help, check out these videos!

He's got some good tutorials on UVMapping there and unwrapping.

Also please don't be a dick and post crappy comments my teacher made these in his spare time in good will.

There's your problem.
Multiplayer Goldsource mods are pointless now because multiplayer games require several active servers to remain active and Goldsource just doesn't have the playerbase required for a new mod to break into the "market".
Cs 1.6 still has a couple thousand servers.

Skyrim is a beautiful place, but the engine itself is pretty disappointing graphically imo.
I was expecting to be blown away and instead it just feels exactly the same as the fallout 3 engine. Low res textures and all. It's also fairly terribly optimized in places.
That's because there is a bug in Skyrim, all the games 2048x2048 textures and 1024x1024 are failing to load and are instead replaced by their crappier 512x512 counterparts, making the game look 2/4x worse than it should be. The developers are trying to figure out why the proper textures aren't being rendered so in the future patches this will be fixed.

The best tools to use are the latest VHLT tools, which are vhlt 25. I use these. Lighting/Shadows and map size is far better than latest shlt (3.9) and zhlt doesn't even compare, since shlt and vhlt are both upgraded versions of zhlt 3.4.
Skals SkalsLevel Designer

This seems like the appropriate place to place these:

Latest VHLT:
http://forums.svencoop.com/showthread.php?t=38059
Latest SHLT:
http://forums.svencoop.com/showthread.php?t=36733

When mapping for Goldsource, always make sure you have the latest and best tools available, or you may be limiting yourself to how bad the tools you use are.

I have one question, a weird one maybe. I know texture scaling affects game performance and compile times, but what about the scale on null and bevel textures? Will it make a difference if all my bevel and null textures are scaled to 3.0 for example rather than 1.0?

Also, what is the maximum scale i can go to before errors happen?

Ah yes, for realistic purposes they add mountain ranged and trees behind the invisible walls just to make it appear like there is actually something there, but when you go past the horizon there is probably nothing there at all. Why would there be? It would be a waste of development time and game performance.

In goldsource, if your geometry is really weird or off the grid, it can end up disappearing in game once compiled, that might have been the case for your map, but since you remade that area you probably made it properly this time around so it no longer disappears.

This is a great idea. We can put all our knowledge together for everyone to be used.
These are the methods I use while creating my maps:
-Null/Bevel brushes for all invisible faces.
-not allowing any prop objects to connect to avoid unnecessary face cutting.
-Connecting all wall edges together like this \ If you know what I mean.
-Not using func_water. Func_water can always be seen in your map no matter how many objects it gets blocked by, it will still be drawn on the screen, making it something you shouldn't really ever use. For water use func_illusionary instead and make the contents water, it should create water effect and still be seen through, but illusionary isn't drawn when behind other objects like func_water is.

What I haven't really learned properly is the hint brush, the tutorial we have here hasn't really cleared things up for me.

...and the sky brush optimization. I heard somewhere that it does something concerning polys but I'm not sure.

I do. But he's not as bad as one of my friends, me and my friend went to the eurogamer expo earlier this year and we played Skyrim beta there, the first thing he did was grab his destruction spell and try to burn all the little children to death. There were people looking at his screen shouting oh my god what the hell are you doing? Because there was a long line there.

If you think that's bad in MW2 in no Russian mission he searched the entire airport for this little girl hiding with her Teddie bear then found her walked up to her and just went BANG!

I'm getting a lot of constant freezing as I enter the open world area. about every 10 seconds or so the game would freeze for two more and then go back to normal, no frame-rate drops though. Only happens in the open world, not sure of the problem, the only thing I can think of is Skyrim has some weird way of drawing objects onto the screen and everytime it draws some new ones my game freezes.

In other news, I've been making mods and re-textures for Skyrim lately, here's the most popular one I've made:
