Try validating your GCFs on the Steam site.

If not, maybe move/rename the GCF, launch Steam, close it, and move/rename it back.

Good points:
  • Reasonable OS;
  • Delphi.
Bad points:
  • Hugely aliased (good term, Mephs ;));
  • Messy desktop (do you really need things like "CS manual" there?;
  • Loads of "shortcut to" and lacks of initial capitals :P;
  • Internet Exploiter (Opera, Firefox)
  • Tons of crappy stuff running in the background wasting your resources!

Thirty seconds to start Steam? That's poor :|.

Anthony, the Portable Network Graphics format is lossy differently (assuming it actually is lossy, I'm not sure). It's also non-proprietary, unlike GIFs, which it hopes to replace (since it can have low-colour images with transparency ? even true alpha channels like Targa).

Hm, perhaps fragmentation or a small swap file? I very highly recommend Diskeeper for defragging and a 2GB pagefile if you have a gig of RAM and HDD space to burn (can't hurt to have a bigger effective disk cache, can it?).

If that doesn't do it, probably just slightly poor coding or a complicated operation in the code.

As for walls, I'd guess it's like CS in that it depends on how thick the wall is. Try firing through a really thin brush and see if you get bullet holes on the other side.

Aha. I remember this eluding me when I played CS with POD-Bot. They are in pak0.pak in sound/vox and they were used in HL for the voice announcements. You can use them in the console by, if I remember correctly:

speak vox/word

without an extension. You can also use, for example:

speak hgrunt/word

to use hgrunt sounds, etc. Have a look at pak0.pak in Wally (or, of course, half-life.gcf in GCFScape) and you'll be able to get the lists of words, and the sounds themselves if you so desire.
