Seventh, that one looks good, But I will keep the one I have for a few reasons:
1. Its slick, more apelling to the eye.
2. It has greater contrast in the swirls, instead of the jumbled blue in my last one
3. The BL is one color, not too dark. More standoutish.

Should I just put BL in the Middle of some interesting pattern again? Or should I go for something more customized.

It seems like TWHL has a limited space...

When you find something like that, try and figure out what it does. You may end up with a desirable effect that can spice up your maps. Everone has something in their maps thats... well... special...
Well, That rating system is just kind of pointless, but a so called "rank" by member names would actually encourage new members to try and obtain one by being more active.

As you can tell, it didn't work, and now I am publically embarrassed....

But then, as I looked at the new exiting features that have swarmed The Whole Half-Life like bees, I realized that there were also some new button on the side of the screen. This so called "side" is commonly known as a "toolbar", oddly enough this so called "toolbar" did not have any tools at all... in fact... it was actually just a bunch of links, so I concluded that it was a "link-bar" or "Side-bar", not the toolbar that we so commonly see on the top and sides of the screen. Anyway, as I looked at these new buttons, something caught my eye... It was a beautiful woman! her short blond hair curled around her head, and her amazing eyes struck my heart! She was more beautiful than any girl I have ever met before! MY heat throbbed at this wonderful sight! My life changed immediatly! But enough of that... I look at the so called "side-bar", or "link-bar", if you perfer, although I always would wonder why someone would perfer such a pointless thing, even though it does make a point... well, all points are pointless, unless they got a sharp edge... well, anyway, I look on the side, and saw a button that made me think "Marriage? on TWHL? why?". This curious button was merely entitled: "Propose"... so I ask you... Why?

or, you could have steam come out of one, and fluid come out of one that is farther away from the steam one.

I like the Building, but the picture is missing some details.
I would make one of those cylindrical pipes on the exterior of the pipe be draining some kind of fluid. You could make a pretty interesting Flow with HL1, but you need to use the right textures, or just make your own. If you need help with that, just ask me
Plus, your terrain needs to be a little better. Check out Pepper's tutorial on Terrian, and use his nice system.
Remeber, whatever detail you add will always make it better
