I'm assuming he's referring to the website's content information, which I guess will act as the key words for Google. But it still does not hurt to have plenty of meta data key words for the other search engines that do use them.

Hmm, so are links just based on text used in the website? And by fall apart, you just mean don't get any business?
Falling apart means making only a small amount of sales or maybe none at all. Good Search Engine Optimization for your website means your website will be found listed high up on the search engines.

Let me give you an example pertaining to your case:

Let's say that a potential customer looking to buy a ceramic teapot, visits a search engine, like for an example Google, types in the key words "ceramic teapot" on Google's search text box. After pressing the search button, Google will return the search results just like these:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=ceramic+teapot&aq=0s&oq=ceramic+tea+&aqi=g-s1g9

Now, if you look at your website's HTML source code, at the top there should be a section called the "head" ( <head></head> ). In the head section are what are called the "Meta Tags". One of these meta tags will have listed the "Key Words". The key words are pretty much the words or phrases that describe what your website is all about.

So in your website's case, the meta tag key words will be words like teapot, ceramics, pottery, Texas....and the list goes on, I'm sure you get the idea. Now, you see all those websites listed on Google's search result listed above? If you were to check their meta tag key words, they will the key words "ceramic teapot" on them. Well, if your website has those key words too, then your site will also show up on Google's search results for those particular search words.

That link you gave earlier for that oestreichpottery.com website, let's take a look at their meta tags as a working example. This is a copy & paste of their head section:

<head>
<title>Welcome to Oestreich Pottery</title>
<meta name="description" content="Oestreich Pottery - Site now features an online gallery of pottery work created by Jeff Oestreich titled, 4 From a Firing: A Collector's Gallery.">
<META name="keywords" content="oestreich pottery, jeff oestreich">
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
</head>

I hope this helps you to understand better what SEO is in part about.

Don't forget also, if you build the site from the ground up, you will need to apply some proper Search Engine Optimization (SEO). I once read somewhere that 8 out of 10 ecommerce sites fail within the first year of online operation, and the number one reason for this, is poor SEO. Optimizing your website's meta tags for maximum relevance in the major search engines like MSN, Yahoo and especially Google is super critical to your web store's success. Have you tried selling your stuff on eBay? Depending on what your startup budget is, you can open a basic store front inside eBay for $15.95 a month. Of course, when selling on eBay you have to be careful on what and how you list the items. If you list a lot of items and they don't sell, you are still stuck with eBay's insertion fees, regardless if you sold them or not.

Now, there's also this other online auction site that's just like eBay called Wigix. It might not have eBay's huge visitor traffic, but they still have a respectable amount of visitors. But at least they are free to use, Wigix does not have insertion fees like eBay does. If your budget is tight, you should try them out, you got nothing to loose with them. www.Wigix.com

One last thing, if you have not done so yet, you are going to need to open a PayPal or Google Checkout account (or both). On my ecrater store I accept payments through either one of these two payment gateways, they are both free to use anyway.

Here's a few names I came up with. I apologize ahead of time if they sound too corny:

Texan Forge
Texan Firepot
Lone Stoneware
Southern Ceramics
Fire Pitt Creations
Tex'sculp

Now that I got that out of the way, I have a few questions:

Have you decided yet on what type of store front setup you are going to use for your web store? What I mean is, are you going to create your ecommerce website from scratch or use some kind of remotely hosted, all-in-one easy to use solution, like for an example these here:

www.vstore.ca

www.ecrater.com

www.vendio.com/ecommerce/free-ecommerce-site

I myself use ecrater.com for one of my online shops, which I sell tropical snacks, you can see it here in action: http://coquimart.ecrater.com

I have some experience setting up web stores from scratch and their shopping carts, so if you have any questions or need some tips, send me a personal message (PM).

Seeing how strongly you feel on your points you just gave, and the fact that I just don't have the energy right now to continue the way I was, you can have the last say on this, at least between me and you. The way I see it, the world of programming is so huge, so multi-faceted and diverse in all kinds of ways, it's just impossible for any one single person to really know what's going on. I will be the first one to say that at this juncture, what I have said so far, is just speculative and educative opinion based on somebody else's research. Yep, I have the balls to say that.

Java becoming increasingly popular as of late you say? I think is more than just of merely "late"! If you take a look at this chart scale, you will notice Java has been the most popular programming language since at the very least 2002. In fact, by the way it looks on the chart scale below, it looks like it gets even more popular the further back you go in time:

...but I don't really believe the numbers on that site because programming is a decidedly "offline" sport.
Really?.....I guess you have never heard then of Java applets inside HTML, or JavaScript powered web forms, or ActionScript powered Flash sites or even C#.net powered web databases? Maybe programming was an "offline sport" as you put it years ago, but in today's so-called "Web 2.0" internet, that's no longer the case. Yep, programming is indeed an online sport now as much as it is still a offline one too.

And as for the numbers you do not believe on that site, well.....you did read this part, right?:
The ratings are based on the number of skilled engineers world-wide, courses and third party vendors. The popular search engines Google, MSN, Yahoo!, Wikipedia and YouTube are used to calculate the ratings.
I mean, how much of a research do you really need?

True. I was only just a "bit" surprised, but I already knew it was high up there on the list. But the thing is, a lot of people hate Java, sometimes it can be a bit messy to deal with, it's also a misunderstood programming language by newbees. I my self like it most of the times, you can do so many things with it, offline or online.

I came across this site that tracks and ranks the use and popularity of all the world's programming languages. This site is called "The TIOBE Programming Community index". Anyway, what really astounded me was the sheer number of so many different programming languages around. Hell, about 75% of them I have never heard of! For an example, these are some actual names of apparently legit programming languages out there in use:

"Awk"
"Groovy"
"MOO"
"SuperCollider"
.....and the list goes on! There's even one called "Boo"!

They also have a top 100 list of the most popular programming languages in use today, and to tell you the truth, I was a bit surprised at who's #1! I for one, thought it would be C++ or C#, but no! But hey, at least good' old C came in at a very close #2 in the list.

By all means, see for your selves: http://www.tiobe.com/index.php/content/paperinfo/tpci/index.html

Heck, I myself once managed to secure two contract jobs from a small local engineering firm from my area that was listed on Gamasutra. But hey, don't worry if you don't have Vista or Windows 7, you can still do the same thing on Windows XP, the only thing is, it's going to take a few more steps to pull it off. Here's some step by step instructions for XP: http://tweakhound.com/xp/tasks/sch_defrag.htm

Just to be on the safe side, make sure you have Defraggler's settings set on defragging the whole drive, and not just some folders/files/sectors.

Question: How many partitions do you have making up your C: drive? I might be wrong on this, but if you have more than one partition on your C: drive, then it might be that only one of the partitions is getting defragged and the other is not, which might explain why only about half of your hard drive is getting defragged.

I don't think psilous is asking for somebody to give him a free video card (or monitor?), this is more of a case of a "translation-typo" snafu. It's very obvious English is not is native language and knows hardly any of it. My guess is, he's relying on some type of online translation gimmick, like for an example Google's translation site, which is not very good at translating the right way. I see this all the time when ever I troll some of the bigger, "international" forum boards.

I think what he is asking for, if anybody here knows of a place where he can find a cheap "what-ever-he's-looking-for" item. To tell you the truth, I feel sorry for the guy, but at the same time, I also feel hlife_hotdog's and Unbreakable's pain in reading his strange post too.

in Unity 3D is now free! Post #275005
I know whenever 3D development is being mentioned on TWHL, most often than not Hammer is the preferred subject, and rightly so, since that's what TWHL is at the heart of. Now, I know for a fact that at times, other 3D development applications are mentioned and discussed, nothing wrong with that.

Among these other non-Valve 3D development programs that have been mentioned before, there is one in particular that I have seen being mention 2 or 3 times in some form or other on TWHL: Unity 3D. Now, for those of you here that are acquainted with Unity 3D, know very well that their development suite is not free, it costs a lot of money. Well, that's no longer the case.

The package that was called "Unity Indie" and now is called simply "Unity", will be completely free for developers of virtual worlds and games, which by the way has until now been sold for $199.00, but not any more. Again, it's FREE now! Unity is a set of browser plug-in and toolkit to make games and virtual worlds.

For modelers, Unity can read .FBX, .dae (Collada), .3DS, .dxf and .obj files. You can go to Unity's site and download your copy of Unity and start developing virtual worlds and games with it for free.

Personal Comments: I like the fact that you can export standalone apps or games with it though. It is far more than just a map editor.

I agree. That's why I suggested the remotely hosted CGI scripts option, it's good for those that do not know how to set up server side scripts or modules. But if your web host offers a password protected directory, then take advantage of it, since it could also be using .htaccess the way Penguinboy suggested. Client side scripts like JavaScript and DHTML does have it's uses, but there are certain jobs that should be left to server side apps like PHP, ASP, CGI, and others like them.

I hear you Penguinboy.

I just happen to have the services of a paid web host for my various websites. It's not much, only $12 annually. This said web host, just like other web hosts out there, offer what is called a "password protected directory" feature. It is easy to use, no programming or coding necessary on the back end of things (server).

Now, my question is, does this solution also fall under your list of bad ideas?

NASA postpones the launch of the Ares 1-X rocket by 24 hours.

Launch Control reported that severe winds, with gusts over 20 knots and peaking at 22 knots, were a key factor that preventing the rocket launch. In addition, clouds associated with the "triboelectrification rule" slowed things down. According to NASA's launch blog, "flying through high-level clouds can generate 'P-static' (P for precipitation), which can create a corona of static around the rocket that interferes with radio signals sent by or to the rocket."
