in Mapping = time consuming? Post #36328
I should try doing stuff on paper. I reckon I'm technically competent, but I never seem to produce any awe-inspiring maps :

Ironically, you should make small details, lights mounted on walls (stops the ugly lighting issues), benches, chairs, etc, func_walls while leaving the walls themselves non-entities.

Nice benches by the way.

hefsys: I'm all for that sorta open-source feel. I can't see why pro mappers are scared someone'd rip their map off. If you're that good, then they can't make it any better. If you're that good then everyone'll know what your work is and will spot rip-offs.

I always release my RMFs. Then again, I haven't made any full-release maps except for the Trapped competition entry (winner ;) )

You could try the example maps section of the vault, maybe, or ask how an effect is achieved in the forums here (after thinking about it yourself first please).

If you put it in the RES file, if you're talking about getting it from the game server. If you're distributing it typically in a WAD, yeah, just put it in the mod directory (i.e. cstrike or valve).

When you get this error, it means you've either not set everything up right, or your map isn't compiling due to a problem. Check the "compile process" window, the grey one that appears. Read it. If you see any errors, look for them on this page.

If there aren't any errors, check all your setup options in Hammer. Try and find the BSP and copy it manually into SteamAppsyourem@ilcounter-strikecstrikemaps if necessary.

On mailing lists, newsgroups or Web forums, the subject header is your golden opportunity to attract qualified experts' attention in around 50 characters or fewer. Don't waste it on babble like ?Please help me? (let alone ?PLEASE HELP ME!!!!?; messages with subjects like that get discarded by reflex). Don't try to impress us with the depth of your anguish; use the space for a super-concise problem description instead.

You can get GCFScape here. Open SteamSteamAppshalf-life.gcf in it, then go to /valve in the GCF (it's like a ZIP archive).

Right-click halflife.wad on the right-hand side, then click Extract. Point it where you want it to go, and voila :)

I'm going to write a tutorial about mapping for Steam.

...plus I already talked about why it DOESN'T WORK:
This is because Internet Explorer shows the reply-post box in a fixed-width font. The posts themselves are shown in a variable-width ('proportionally spaced') font.

Fixed width font:
Every character, symbol, and space occupies the exact same width.

Proportionally spaced font:
A character's width is defined by the amount of width needed to display that particular character.

http://www.chris.com/ascii/font-lesson.html

I think that'll have to go on the new forum readme.
