its going to be a bit hard to run a site off a comp in your home. the bandwidth would be a bit to low
No, the local server is created for the sole purpose of testing the site and design. Once the site is up and running flawlessly, I'll upload the files and publish them.

The real server that handles the traffic is at Surpass Hosting. It has a bandwidth limit of 200 GB per month and 5 GB of storage space. I think that's plenty for a start-up community. I can always upgrade my hosting if the traffic gets busy.

By the way, how heavy is the bandwidth traffic at TWHL? Does it use any PHP tools? Like Mamba or Joomla? Does Seventh code it himself?

I like the consolidation suggestions. Three forums sound good:

General Discussion (any topic)
Gaming (discussion about your favorite and current games--you as a gamer)
  • PC
  • Consoles
Parenting (parenting stories and opinions--you as a parent)
  • Children and Gaming (share your children's gaming experience)
  • Misc (general parenting tips and experiences)

Have you actually bought the domain yet?
Yes, I am the proud owner of www.gamingparents.org

I get my hosting from Surpass Hosting. It's a very good and reputable company.

It sounds like the first step to create the community (after paying for the domain name) is to download and install Apache and MySQL on my computer.

Then, I'm using Joomla and phpBB for my site. I've read some guides on these tools, and they seem very easy to use. With my existing HTML and CSS knowledge, I shouldn't have much problem creating the community (I hope).

Can't connect.
I haven't put anything up yet. It's only at the planning stage.

When I came up with the idea for this gaming community, I was planning to serve the need for all of us (you guys, in particular). Sure, you play a lot of games now as adolescents, but what's going to happen twenty years from now? Are you all going to stop playing HL3/HL4 immediately once you turn 34? I don't think so.

There is such a void in the online community serving older gamers (like myself). When this current gaming generation grows up, my community is going to be the new "geek heaven" for all the gaming adults who love to share their gaming experience with their children.

I can't wait to have my son/daughter play my custom maps I made for HL1 and HL2. It'll be such a bonding experience.

TWHL is the first online community that I ever joined. Mapping for HL1 started it all. You guys are some of my closest friends, that's why I came back for your opinion. I would love to have you contribute (perhaps even moderate) my community.

Imagine that, a fourteen year old moderating a community for thirty-somethings. It's the perfect chance for you to get back at your parents for not letting you play games.

Of course, I would expect certain amount of maturity if you want to be a moderator.

The moral of the story is that CPU temp readings are meaningless unless the ambient room temperature is also reported.

Currently, at 17:53 in the afternoon, my room temperature is 82.5 F (28 C). I have been at work all day, and my PC has been idling all along. However, the CPU temp reported by the sensor is 54 C.

When ambient temperature goes up by 3 degrees Celsius, the CPU temp increases by 8 C.

in CPU Temp Post #194029
As Jobabob said, ambient temperature definitely affects CPU temp, because it determines the temperature of the intake air flowing into the case.

When I measured the CPU temp yesterday, my room temperature was about 26 C (79 F).

Currently, my room temperature is 21 C (around 7 am in the morning), and the CPU temp is idling at 46 C (just browsing TWHL).

I figure as long as the CPU temp stays below 70 for an Athlon XP, there really is no reason to get bent out of shape about the temp. The official AMD requirement is below 85 C. Arctic Cooling recommends Athlon XP temps to be below 75 C.

in CPU Temp Post #193998
We've had quite a few discussions about hardware cooling at TWHL, but none of them addressed specifically about the mechanism of CPU cooling. I want to take a little survey on everyone's CPU temp. I just replaced my old cooling fan with this one. I got this heat sink two years ago from my brother-in-law. He just gave it to me in brand new condition. It's so much quieter than the old one I had.

I'll start the survey with my ancient machine:

Athlon XP 3200+
Stock thermal paste (silicon-based)
Idle CPU temp: 50 C
Load CPU temp*: 57 C
Average RPM: 2200

*The CPU load condition was simulated after playing Half-Life 2 for 30 minutes. The temperature recorded was from the ASUS mobo sensor.

How hot are you?

I just noticed that I can't play HL1 anymore.

When I start HL1 from the Steam Game menu, everything loads fine. When I tried to start a new game, Kasperg's Testlab custom map keeps on loading. I only saved the games for custom maps, but never for the official game.

How do I play the official maps again? I tried loading the Hazard Course, but Kasperg's Testlab loads again.

I mean, Kasperg's maps are great, but I still want to be able to play the official game every now and then.

HELP!

in No keyboard present error Post #192563
I have had my computer for 18 months or so. It's running perfectly until recently, when I started to encounter this error message when I boot up.

This doesn't happen every time I boot, only occasionally (1 out of 5 times). When I see this message, I can just press F1 and continue the boot process. Everything works fine (including the keyboard) after I bypassed it by hitting F1.

I already googled for an answer, and most tech forum suggest that it's a CMOS error. Do I have to replace the CMOS battery?

Here is my spec:
Athlon 3200+ XP
ASUS nFORCE2 A7N8X-E Deluxe
1 GB Corsair in dual-channel
Antec TRUE430 ATX PSU
SEAGATE 7200 ST3200822AS HDD

Nations always need something/someone to blame to keep them satisfied. Jews, Islam, rock, video games.
People fear the things that they do not understand. Parents are afraid of video game's influence on children because most of them have no idea what video games are. When their children spend more than four hours a day doing something that they have absolutely no clues in, it's understandable that they would be afraid.

The wise Yoda shall have the last word, unless the Vortigons have something to add:

"Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering."

As youngs gamers with ignorant and fearful parents, we all suffered at one point or another.

In my book, I will try to make the point that violent games do NOT make non-violent children into homocidal fiends. The cussing is part of the gaming culture, and I dare you to say that children do not cuss as much when they play hockey with each other (or any other thing without the direct supervision of parents).

Hmm, Seventh-Monkey has an interesting point. Sometimes I feel a bit revved up after shooting a bunch of people in the head. But I doubt that translates into real-world violent acts.

I haven't even fired a real gun in my life--only paintball guns.

in Gaming Chapter Post #191300
Dear Editor,

As I finish up the asthma chapter, I ponder about the remaining unwritten ones. I am concerned that the "Infection Run Amok" chapter does not have enough topics to fill 4,000 words.

Instead of struggling with useless filler material, I would like to change the chapter to something entirely different. I was at the public library this afternoon, and I came across a book that addresses parents about their children's video gaming habit. I encounter these types of discussion regularly in my pediatric practice, and there are plenty of myths and misconceptions to talk about. The vast majority of today's parents do not know much about video games, yet their children spend significant portion of their spare time playing them.

Being a gamer and a pediatrician, I am in the best position to lead such discussion. Parents worry about their children's mental health and their behavior being influenced by these games. I think the most important reason why they worry so much is that they know virtually nothing about these games.

I definitely have enough material to fill the entire chapter, and I will focus the discussion on parental misconceptions and the ways computer games can affect their child's health. Here is the chapter outline (with the [H1]'s):

Chapter 14: Fun and Game
  • It's Not All Bad
  • A Brief Orientation on Video Games
  • Violence in Games
  • Sex in Games
  • Gaming and Academics
  • When to Say When (game responsibly)
  • Monitoring Your Budding Gamer
What do you think?
If you are a parent, would you be interested in a chapter on gaming?

No offense to all the native mapping talents at TWHL, but de_nightfever_beta by d00ds is one of the best custom CS:S map I have ever played.

Not only does it look amazing (perhaps one of the best use of lighting and lightmaps in any map), it plays extremely well too. The layout is wonderfully fun. The attention to detail is astonishing.

This is only a beta release, so there are still some minor errors (including a no_draw glitch and overlapping texture), but they are pretty small mistakes.

Make sure you check out the view from the courtyard on the roof and take a ride in the elevator.

I am hoping someone can help me.

One of the first maps I made for HL1 was my apartment (as expected), and I used this custom wad for the map. I did not include the texture into the BSP during compilation.

I no longer have my old computer, which has the donoteatmikezilla.wad installed. When I move out of this apartment eventually, I would like to have that map for nostalgic reasons. It's the first apartment that is shared by my wife and I. It's also the apartment that we got married in.

However, I cannot find this wad file anywhere from the internet anymore. Googling using all sorts of phrases and terms did not yield a positive result. Many of the links are broken, because this is such an old file.

Can anyone helpe me locate this file? Better yet, if you have this .wad on your HDD, can you send it to me? Thank you in advance.

the maps would be nothing without models populating them, textures to make surfaces more than just blank faces, sounds to fill the air, and so on
Everything you mentioned are part of mapping, in my opinion. I use the term "mapping" and "level design" interchangeably.

As mappers, we focus on all those aspects of level design. Mapping isn't just about architecture. Texturing, modeling, lighting, sounds, entity use are all essential components of mapping.

Take "F.E.A.R." for example. The engine is superbly advanced, and the A.I. is revolutionary. But the game is only mediocre because of sub-par level design.

"Quake 4" is another example. "FarCry" could've been a lot better if the mapping were done better. Some of the entity setup and triggers in that game were so buggy that it's hardly playable.

Source may not be the best-looking engine, but the superb mapping for Half-Life 2 more than made up for this shortcoming.
