OR you can get Unity3D so you can model/map in a 3D program of your choice and learn Javascript. 'tis free.

Other than that, the Alien Swarm idea is best.

@Unbreakable: Get smoothing groups on that model first before shadow mapping it. Otherwise it looks too polygonal.

Replace the player.mdl file in the models folder with the model you want, simply done by overwriting it with a new file of the same name if one exists, if it doesn't place a new one anyway. It still works. Any model set for a player model, such as deathmatch player models, ones from other mods, or custom made ones even, will work just fine.

Also, sorry no one helped you with this earlier. I now just noticed it myself. There is no need to post a new post to bump. Near your avatar, a small EDIT link is available if you were the last person to post in that thread. Editing also bumps the thread. A thread will be locked after 90 days of zero activity.

I don't think you can gain experience points in practice mode anyway.

I'm happy with the controls, and the space bar jump isn't that bad. They need to fix a lot of interface glitches.

You would have to double your poly count for that to happen and it would still not exactly look right. The chrome effect is best for world models like Barney's helmet.

I borrowed a sleeve from the ones I had and modeled a new Hand. Looks really good. I wasn't going to remake the sleeve since... well its like beating a dead headcrab.

Ability to move tool handles in the 3D view. In particular, resize brushes, move entities, etc. (Maybe with axis constraints, to deal with 2D => 3D spatial translation? [Perhaps something similar to the gizmo-style handles in 3dsmax?])

I know how to do this.

It does involve teleporting but instead of disabling and enabling them, just use a trigger_changetarget to change the teleport destination and keep it simple.

For the "rounds" system, use game_counters. Each counter has the same name. For example if you have 3 spawn sets, you would need a setup like this.

3 counters of the same name gets fired at the end of a round. ex: "roundcount"

A counter fires its target at 1, 2, and 3 (that's why you need 3) you start on spawnset 1 with the counter initially at 0. So when it fires roundcount, round 2 starts at 1 and also fires the changetarget for spawnset 2. When it gets to 3, reset to round 1 settings.

I think that's it... I can perhaps make a template, I need to update my KOTH setup anyway.

I never was very good at making mods...

I did the basic setup for it, not sure why it crashed for you Stu. Its a steam mod so run it on steam. If you did that, then I don't know.

The idea I had was that I was going to make a small simple island. You transform the island into whatever you want. Yay or nay?

I got a lot done on left4beer in the last two days. I have a nice intro, all of my major trigger setups done unless I add more, a fully functioning addon folder, a new beer skin for the cola, the splashes and support graphics, some additional music, and almost done with the park area. Once that's done, I'll mesh the bowling alley, apartments, and park together to form the first map!

Sorry, no screens until the park is done, I can't show my intro because it will expose some things I want to be kept secret until played.

Any program that can load DXF files (a simple CAD like drawing) exported from Hammer can be loaded into a modeling program and fixed up to be a model. Aside from that, using the power of a modeling program would be far better than using Hammer.

I side with Max, but Blender certainly impresses me with its open-sauce mentality. I've used it and its cake.

I don't think you should let anyone tell you what to use. First find out which programs have good plugins and compatibility, then try some and get a feel for some and choose the one you like, or if you believe in destiny, let the program choose you. ;)

That's some yummy nostalgia.

If I shorten the original idea by a ton I could make a new Turnstile mod. With the new Spirit 1.7 or whatever the latest version is, I could do quite a bit.

Either way, I will finish the weapons as they would appear in the mod which would be a scientist style arm and not an HEV suit arm. One thing at a time though. I need to finish my L4D2 map, and this is the secondary project. I usually work on two things at a time any way.
