My primary complaint about mapping for Source was the lack of variation in the props. How did I never think of using GMod for models...?

@X-LAyer2: Check out LevelCap's channel on YouTube.

I was ready to pack BF3 in when I found his channel. I'm not great now, but I learned a great deal about the game and how to play from his videos. He reviews weapons too so you can get an idea of what you can work with. :D

Yeah. It came up while I was looking for a decent Source single player mod. There seems to be so few. :(

Half-Life came out in 1998 and by 2000 there were a ton of brilliant SP mods. USS Darkstar for example, not to mention They Hunger not long after that. The few good SP mods for HL2 are all set in City 17 and it's starting to get pretty boring.

Downloaded the Strider Mountain mod for HL2. Wow, it's pretty terrible. I have just officially given up on it. The whole mod is riddled with pointless cinematics and the level design is just...ugh.

In the profile on MODDB people were saying the level design looked a little dated and was more on par with HL1. Well, I say it's incredibly dated, more like Doom.

Really, not very good.

I guess it is all down to personal preference. Lots of people didn't buy Battlefield 3 because they had to use Origin to play it and battlelog to find a server.

For one, Origin's input is minimal. It launches battlelog and you never touch it again. Battlelog is pretty awesome. I recently discovered that it records EVERY SINGLE GAME played right down to every shot fired. I love it, others don't. Fair enough I suppose.

Diablo 3's beta is what got my back up about the game. I finally got a connection, started a game and then 3 other guys jumped in and started trashing the place. I felt like I'd been waiting in a queue to get raped.

Also, I don't understand what you mean by "assholes ruining the previous games." I loved Diablo 2. Never once needed to connect to the net and never had an issue with the game. Sure not being connected to the net is the best protection against assholes ruining a game. :P

in Steam screwed me up big time Post #306252
I seriously doubt steam is causing the issue. I'm not a whiz when it comes to PC's and hardware but if it's BSoDing it is more likely a hardware issue. My new PC is a beast, though it has thrown the BSoD in my face a couple of times and it came down to the second NVidia card overheating.

Like Archie said, try running the PC without Steam. Fire it up in safe mode and mess with the settings (like which programs launch with windows).

Got mappers block recently. Been playing a ton of OpenTTD instead. I love it.

Huntey City won't let me build there anymore. Apparently I pissed them off at some point in the past. As such, I ripped out the airstrip I built and moved my interests one city over. Huntey City was the 2nd largest city in the world at one point. Now it's the tenth because they wouldn't let me build a passenger railway.

Fuck you Huntey City. I hope you're happy.

Oh, ok. I wasn't really following D3, I just tried the beta but couldn't connect half the time and when I could there were other people running around in my shit. So there is no official SP at all and you HAVE to be online to play? Fine. D3 can fuck off.

In BF3 I rarely play support. I only picked it up recently for SQDM and TDM games so there are few opportunities to actually drop ammo or health. I'm slowly moving back to recon and playing more engineer now that I've unlocked everything for assault.

So you have to log in just to play? I thought that was only to test the servers during the beta. In that case, I might give D3 a miss. That set up was beyond horrible. I don't want random fuckers jumping into my game! :|

I have also been playing a whole ton of BF3 recently. See Archie's post for full details.

I also tried out the DiRT Showdown demo on steam. It was, not great

Think of the game Happy Wheels, where if you play any of the user created levels it sometimes seems you have to wade through a sea of crap to find anything decent.
The difference being that users can rate things on SteamWorks and you can then filter by rating to only see the best contributions. Been a while since I played Happy Wheels and while I KNOW that had a rating system I don't remember being able to filter by rating.
Yeah, why don't you try sticking this up your ass, see if it fits.

No.

Also, I thought we had already agreed not to have too much coding work? Though I must admit I do like the idea of a tactical mod, playing as the commander of a metrocop unit. Has some great potential for character development too, like you see in the Brothers in Arms games. That would be a fairly big project with lots of voice acting needed though.

I'm in no way a professional with Source. Hell, I've been mapping with GoldSource for 12 years or so now and I still mess up with that from time to time. While I am more comfortable with it, even I know that it's time to move on.

I can see though this as a future implementation of HL3, a more in-game editing approach like the Crysis Sandbox.
Now THAT is something I would be interested in. You could get the architecture down in hammer, compile. Then in-game, you could add your props, enemies, decals and other entities (kinda like GMod)... Man, I'm hoping they do add that now. :)

I think it's good that they are including this feature. Like Pb said, it would encourage more people to try out mapping for other titles.

Personally, I don't care for puzzles anyway. I played Portal 2 for the plot, the puzzles were just a fun distraction. That's probably why the co-op mode wasn't really enjoyable for me.

If the DLC is story based then great. If it is literally just a string of test chambers, I probably won't bother.

With regards to setting, why not just leave eastern europe? iirc, CSS content is available to anyone with the source SDK right? You could go right off the grid and show the effects of the combine rule in places like Hawaii or Africa, even Japan. If you have access to Google Maps, the street view opens up an unlimited supply of reference material for architecture and textures. The same enemies with new skins could work. :D

@Striker: We use it when we're working on The Core and so far it has proved invaluable. Such a simple process too. Just right click the folder, hit commit, and any file that differs from the one in the repo, get's uploaded. :)

Plus the roll-back capability and the fact that everyone has a username. So, should someone mess up your work, you can restore it to how you left it, find out who broke it, then kill them to death.

I would go SVN too, partly because I'm used to it, partly because update logs can be useful to see who has done what, when and why. They can also be abused for lulz. (See Archie's image)

As for the project, fuck yeah! Source project for sure, and definitely set in the HL universe to avoid to much coding. That's not to say we couldn't have coding if the need arose. A POV sequel would be very cool, and definitely hasn't been done before.

The thing is, USS Darkstar was a classic GoldSource mod with no coding or custom skins or anything. All they had were a few new sounds and the maps, and they managed to pull of an environment and story as far removed from Black Mesa as you can get (without coding and custom models :P)

What could I bring to the project

My crappy maps. I'm not a great Source mapper, but this project could help me improve my skills with you guys being able to edit my maps and give feedback and advice.

My crappy models. I'm learning Blender, having completed a couple of models now, but again, a long way off professional so this would be a learning project.

My manly voice. Got a Blue Microphones Snowball which is decent enough quality for voice acting.

My handsome face. I'm not afraid to get it out there. Video updates and interviews are kinda my thing. :P

If you're not hearing any sounds at all, you've messed up somewhere with the format. Launch the mod with the dev console so you can see any errors in the console.

If you're still hearing the original sounds and not the news ones, your file paths are wrong.

Behind the scenes - Make a map, either Black Mesa themed or not, but make it so that it's more like a movie set. Starting in a crazy environment, then finding a way out to a back area, with dressing rooms and a snack bar, etc.

Shuttle - Make a one man spacecraft, be it a shuttle, a VIP's escape pod or just a space mercenaries home.

in Valve Employee Handbook Post #305666
HL2 was released after CSS, I suppose HL3 will get a release after CS:GO. But that is again speculation.
Consider however, that Valve showed off HL2 a lot during it's alpha and beta phases in order to get people excited. This came a long time before CSS was even announced. I still remember the first time I saw this on a PCGamer disk. That was from E3 in 2003, a good 18 months before the game was released.

I don't expect to see HL3 until late 2014. I also have many concerns.

The position where HL2:EP2 left off is going to be a real challenge for the developers. They need to handle to characters really carefully following the closing scene.

On top of that, they need to ensure that the combine advisors, seemingly very powerful and tough enemies, are going to be fun to fight, while being able to use their psychic attacks to rip up the environment dynamically, rather than the scripted physics effects shown in EP2.

Then, the environments themselves. The arctic, and the interior of a ship. These do not sound like groundbreaking and interesting environments to play in. City 17 was vast, sure, but the restrictions in place made sense due to the plot (Ignoring the whole impenetrable wooden doors of course). The arctic is a massive, open expanse of white and blue. It's going to take some effort to be able to keep the player on track without being obviously restricted. Then the Borealis itself. A ship's interior would take us back to a linear interior section, more cramped than HL2's god awful but thankfully short sewer sections. Maybe I'm just not capable of thinking of ways to make these maps while being fun and engaging. I hope that's the case and Valve's guys know what they are doing...

Wow, long post. Sorry. Just my thoughts. I'll be off...
