My map's done! - Well a beta release anyway. Got some easter eggs in it, and everything's wadincluded. Running the full compile now. It'll be in the vault shortly.

Yeah. I say beta release only because I have no clue how the gameplay is going to work out. Some open areas, some closed areas. Lots of verticalness.

I'm workin on a DM map specifially for the server
should be done in a few hours.
I'm using rim's method of just building archetecture with one texture, and then going back and re-texting later.
It's working.
But i just lost about 20 min of work, i crashed hammah

hmm i screwed something up...
latest compiles are screwey... { textures arent even rendering... not solid..
AAA trigger textures are rendering, but they're also acting as triggers.
no masters are set, and a bunch of my func_walls arent where i want them to be....
guess i just have to compile in the normal directory and move the bsps over..

Well i don't know the exact details of it all, but that's not too hard to pull off.

Make a trigger_multiple around otis. (name it: trig_need_pass)
Have trig_need_pass target a scripted SENTENCE which makes otis say the desired line.

Have a trigger once target otis' scripted SEQUENCE, and have it's master be got_secutiry_pass (a multisource entity)

Have the security pass target a multimanager targeting an invisible func_door that has "trig_need_pass" in the killtarget field.

have that also target the master "got_security_pass"

And you should be good to go.

The multimanager targets an invisible door because that's the only way to have a trigger multiple be deactivated (that i know of) so once the door opens (where ever it is) it removes the trigger multiple from the level.

When you go back over there, the scripted sentence wont fire, and otis should open up the door for you, because that trigger_once's master will then be activated.

Let me know if that works. If not i'll think up a work-around.

And the castle will be a one map tower. But that now means i need to add some more background detail.
Almost like a 3-d skybox. But it wont be a skybox, it'll actually be there.

And As for the disposed progress. I got all the files everyone submitted and i have an organized folder list.
The castle itself might have to extend to 2 maps. Or at least a tower of sorts.

It's okay. I'm not touching this again until post-competition. Yet i havent been mapping at all because our band has a show friday and we've spent the last week advertising and practicing. Putting up flyers at bars and crap.
Lmao. I wish i could map at work. That'd make my whole life a hellova lot easier.

Ok. So. Now that i've finally put the finishing touches on my compo map (post-compo fixes / edits) it should be in the vault tonight; depending on wether or not my band plays a show tonight.[can't say i'm looking forward to this one though.]

So now I can continue to work on the castle disposed maps! Hotdog's map is 90% finished! It just needs the following:
-New textures
-Full vis compile
-Outro teleport sequence when the TWHL emblem is collected.

After that, i'll move on to the Captains, and then Atoms HUGE monstrosity of a map pack.

So over the next few days i'm going to have to organize all these files into a mod folder, and get crackin.

Updates coming soon, when i'm out of work.

Yeah.. It's not a pretty sight. And you often times want to get rid of leaks ASAP. They can quickly ruin your day.
Try making your basic archetecture / room layout on the 16 unit grid, and then add details and stuff later on in the smaller grid sizes.
The more organized you are, and the cleaner your brushwork, the less leaks you're likely to produce.

Other factors contribute to leaks as well

one instance being an entity outside of your map (in the dreaded void)

The CompilatorSolves all* compiling isses.
And i guess the only way to compress your filesize down would be to scale down the textures, and retexture everything.
-nowadTEXTURES just combines all custom textures into the bsp.
And if you're running the map off a server the server should provide some sort of package that goes along with the map.
Should include the models you use as well. So see if the bsp+textures are larger than the bsp and textures seperatley. And then send the map to a server.

I don't know which would be larger, the wadincluded, or the non wad included. but i do know since you have to download models seperatley, it might make sense to keep your textures seperate.
What size are your textures btw? 128*? 256*? 512*?

And there's other stuff you can do to shrink the size of the bsp. Say, run a compile on Full Vis. Sometimes you just have to live with large files.

And if you're map is good enough, people won't mind sitting thru the long download times. Expecially if they're server regs. They tend to stick around no matter what. Just like TWHL, It's not only the content that keeps people coming, but the community.

Same goes for servers.
*The compilator has solved 99.9% of my compiling problems. As this might not fix your problems, don't hold me to the "fixes all" portion. I do however, find the compilator a neccessary part of any half life development folder.

Are there 2 copies of thAt wad? Copy the other one to the valve folder. Half life is reading the wad, just cant find that texture.. It happens to me all the time. You won't even need a recompile, just quit hl, copy, restart

well you can have him do a script to hit a button that only he can access... like a security clearence / code. have that trigger the multisource.
I've never tried that but i believe that will work.

Ok here's a quick walkthru of the secutiry pass before opening the door.

It's simple as hell. And credit goes to Atom for teaching me:

say your security pass is a button
have the security pass button trigger a multisource called security_ms
have your door's master set to security_ms

And that's it.

Your door doesnt need a name unless it's triggered by a button.
In which case, you'd need the buttons master to be the multisource.
and it won't open unless the multisource is active- which happens only after aquiring the pass.

Set it up nice and simple like that, then you can add different effects into it. Like models and sprites / sounds via multimanagers.

Multimanagers are easy as well

just give it a name using smart edit, turn off smart edit, hit the add button, and type in the name of the entity you want to trigger, and in the next field type in the delay (in seconds) you want that to occur.

a zero delay works fine, and you can trigger more than one thing at the same time.
limit is 16 entities, then you'll have to resort to a second multimanager.

Another note. I would reccommend using Aiscripted rather than just scripted.
The ai one is not interrruptable, whereas if you were to say, kill the scientist mid route to the scanner, you're screwed.

If you kill the aiscripted scientist mind route, he would die after running his script. Makes for a comedic effect, i must say.

Nade the rocks blocking the cave.
There's 3 possible openings in the rock.
Remember the quote from armageddon:
Hold a match in your hand it burns.
Hold a match in your fist it burns EVERYTHING.
One of the drawback to not having anoter 4 hours was once i got everything working i had to submit, there was no time to add hints and other minor details and recompile and submit... and i'm still confused about that wad issue.

Later on today (in like 12 hours or so) i'm re-submitting the map in the vault (not for the compo, that one's done) so its the way i want it.
A friend of mine played it yesterday, he said it was amazing but very hard and confusing.

From his confusion and difficulties, i re-worked a bunch of scripts and he played it again. Even tho he just played it earlier he said everything was much clearer, and it's easier to follow.

So now all i have to do is fix the wad issue and add some more bells and whistles. And maybe an actual ending. =p
And i still cant get rid of those nasty un-seen face glitches. They really kill the atmosphere.

that's the green hallway to the south jeff.. the building is a hexagon. Only one hallway on the bottom floor is accessible, and 4 rooms on the top floor... I'm gonna update the drawing. you'll see what i mean in a few.

I have a twhl skyscraper DM map i was working on when COMPLETLEY inebriated one day. I'll have to revive that from my graveyard and re-submit.
Has crazy vertical aspects to it.
And a 3rd floor pool! XD

Speaking of graveyard.. Now i must resume my work on castle disposed.
I'll start that tuesday. The G/f is back from holiday (that's for all your non-americans) and we gotta so see Harry Potter tonight.

1) is your keyboard bugging out?
2) What about your videocard drivers
3) I lied i have more than 2 ideas
4) does this happen in any other game?
5) is only custom maps, or every single one
6) reset your controls to default
7) verify integrity of game cache
8) backup all your maps and re-install
